Roy Keane

Thank you ROI for appointing Roy Keane, does that now mean we don't have to suffer that guy's stupid and inane comments when watching England on ITV.

What on earth possesed the powers at be to use him as a pundit for England games, surely someone better was available.

Good luck ROI, you're going to need it with that fool in charge, couldn't manage his way out of a crisp packet, however with a decent man managing him he might learn something, although I doubt it.

I liked him as a pundit. At least he offered a different opinion.

Yes that of a sulky, I'll say anything that gets me attention type pundit.

I like someone who says something against the norm, unless it is too bizarre. Makes you look at a footballer/team from another side so you can analyse them better.

Good,

now we'll be able to see how RK measures up against Mick McCarthy who, as I recall, he 'didn't rate either as a manager or a human being'.

Just to equal him, he needs to i) qualify for the World Cup ii) lose his best player to a tantrum and iii) come within a penalty shoot out defeat against one of the World's great footballing nations of reaching the quarter final.

All in all my money is on Mick.

Roy is the assistant though so really you cannot compare the two. I always liked Mick and for me his sidequalified for the 2002 WC was the best Irish side ever, man for man not as good as Jack's sides in 1990 and 1994 (I'd argue that man for man Ireland had a better team then England did at the 1990 WC) but as a team Mick's side in 2002 was better.

So Mick v Roy cannot be compared, maybe Roy v Mick Byrne makes more sense.

Don't accept that for a moment.

He's a massive part of the management team - more like a junior partner than an assistant, he's an alpha-male who is more than capable of making his presence felt and he's there to make a difference. Plus, his boss, by his own reckoning (or he wouldn't even work with him, like he wouldn't work with Mick), is better than Mick - so he's already got a head start.

But if you want, let's just see if the 'dream ticket' of O'Neill and Keane can do as well as McCarthy. like I said, my money is on McCarthy.

You mean, like he didn't go into the job trying to undermine Mick McCarthy?

No, I believe, in keeping with everything it is possible to discern about his character through the media , how he behaves and what he has said about himself (e.g. admitting he was out to 'get' Alf-Inge Haaland) he'll go into the job thinking he knows best and and trying to make sure that he wants, happens. Does he really strike you as an 'assistant' type of guy?

'I know you are a Wolves fan so you must be a big fan of Mick' - believe me, these two things do not necessarily follow. As it goes, I'm no particular fan of Mick McCarthy's although I think he did a decent enough job for us up to a point and if I 'hate' (by far too strong a word, although I freely admit he is not my cup of tea) Roy Keane, it's more to do with his thuggish behaviour (to opponents and neighbours alike) than what happened in 2002 - though for a man who accuses Alex Ferguson of being disloyal (although I agree with him on that score) what he did, and especially when and how he did it, was pretty unforgiveable.

And, no I wouldn't compare Richard Cheney to Barack Obama - just like I wouldn't compare running (one of) the most powerful nations on earth to running a second rate international football team - not really a good analogy.

Isn't Martin O'Neill the main guy, with Roy Keane as assistant?
