In the summer there was speculation that we were offered a swap deal- Mata for Rooney. I know this was in the end proved to be complete rubbish, but at the time most United fans (including myself) were saying we should bite Chelsea's hand off at such a deal. With Mata now not being picked by Mourinho for some absurd reason it's not impossible that he could be used in an attempt to prize Rooney from us in January or next summer. My question is, with Rooney back to his best, would anyone be interested in such a deal?
As for me, I've been totally won over by Wayne, he looks a new player under Moyes and it would take a substantial sum of money along with Mata for me to consider it a decent bid.

Both at their best are on similar level and both sets of fans wouldn't swap either of them.

Honestly, the only players for whom I would swap Rooney are Messi and Ronaldo. I'm not saying there aren't any other better players in his position (there are a few possible candidates: Ozil, Iniesta, Mata etc. etc) but for me the influence that he has on our team is invaluable.

It's difficult. There's pros and cons for either deal. But I definitely think the deal was a possibility even if the Chelsea fans swear it was never on.

I still would probably take Mata over Rooney however I still wouldn't want Chelsea to get Rooney.
My main reason is because this season our attacking play hasn't actually been that great, especially in open play and through the middle (our wings are no much better) and this is exactly the area where Rooney operates. For me this isn't much of a surprise as it was always a problem area for me.
Rooney and RVP are both very good players but I am still not convinced as to whether there is any kind of link up play between them and they have been playing together now for nearly 18 months. I just think for the team as a whole Mata COULD possibly fit if we use RVP up top.
I know Rooney has offered much in terms of work rate and his set pieces but is that really good enough for a forward on the wages he is on, when you compare him this season to Suarez or Aguero then you can see what we should expect from a forward on top of their game.
