I was on travel and missed the final day of Tendulkar's test career. Just had the opportunity to catch his farewell speech on video. He was gracious and humble, as always.
IMHO, Going by sheer numbers, Sachin is at least the second best batsman of all-time, if not the best.
Nevertheless, I felt Indian fans, administrators, and media were rather fanatical about his status and his retirement.
When the video showed Dravid, Laxman and Ganguly in the audience, I felt bad for them that they never had a proper farewell, especially for Dravid, who was no less a cricketer than Sachin.

Dravid was a genius. Better than Tendulkar IMO in terms of being able to play on any surface.

Yes i noticed that. I did feel really bad for him. The thing is we all will never know if dravid nd vvs were forced to retire or not. Laxman was even selected for nz series and was very keen to play vs eng last year but retired jist days before the test.
Dravid defenitely deserved a farewell test because im sure many fans would hv loved to see him play his last test.

Dravid was as humble as tendulkar if not more. He was a team player and despite not playing odi's for years he was always commited to work hard and prepare for any series. He was without a doubt the most fittest player in the team. Perhaps even in world cricket you will not find a more fitter player. He was a team player and would do anything for the team. That is why he has so much respect from fans all over the world.
He is one player i can tell that the loses in England and Aus would have hurt him a lot. He cared so much for indian cricket and it is evident now when he is speaking on how we can make indian cricket clean.
I would really love to see him and ganguly become coach of indian cricket team. They would do wonders with the team.

i too missed the speech. Was a great player, his longeivity was impressive ,only golfer can have longer career than cricketer and sachins career span suits a golfers career span.

Longevity - Consistency - Technique = Batting perfection.
Sad to see the little master go, but what a career!!

Agree that Tendulkar is at the top of the list when you consider all three characteristics: longevity, consistency, and technique.
Cricinfo has a nice article on Sachin stats.

One of a kind story. The only weakness in the stats was his 4th inning average.
