""F1 is selling the idea of high-octane drama, wheel-to-wheel derring-do, death-defying skill, not an unaccompanied toodle along empty roads on a Sunday afternoon..."
Whole thing.

Death of Formula One?

Death of Formula One?
Surely not.
F1 is pandering to a TV audience that is not worth bothering about. ITV exercised a clause in their contract and withdrew from their exclusive rights one year earlier than they had to in order to invest their TV money in European football.
Bernie was so desperate to find a UK broadcaster that he was prepared to offer the rights to F1 to the BBC for a low fee. The free to air broadcasters were all broke and would not touch F1 with a barge pole yet the BBC paid a fortune of other people's money to attract a low audience. Sky attracts about 600,000 viewers to F1
Growth of idiots posting utter nonsense on F1 sporting forums = definitely.
We have low downforce Monaco, a 2013 evolution McLaren faster than it was in 2012, a Monaco winning driver that is not good enough to win the race he won and a dog on a lease.
We also have people declaring that Vettel is great because he is young and speaks English. Not to mention one of these fools posting “who is Niki Lauda”. Yes they actually posted that.
My favourite = “real drivers do not race at Indy 500 or Le Mans 24 hours”
Wow.

To me these are the two events that truly capture the spirit of motor racing.
Le Mans, an endurance race to prove the reliability of cars. Such a challenge to the drivers, although I think they should be limited to 2 per car, but there you go.
The challenge of the sunset/sunrise, rain, fog, heat, cold, traffic and car frailty, all so relevant, even now.
Indianapolis.......
First used in 1911 and still the same layout. If it was in "Nancy Boy" Europe it would have twelve chicanes by now.
A supremely difficult track to set a car up for, sensitivity is everything, well, everything after speed!
I have nothing but respect for Indy car drivers and sports car drivers.
Truly.... what motor racing is really about.
"Not to mention one of these fools posting “who is Niki Lauda”. Yes they actually posted that."
WHAT? I missed that!!
I criticise Lauda occasionally but the bloke is a living legend, truly and deserves the respect of any human being for simply surviving, like Muhammad Ali.
Many here are totally ignorant of what Lauda did for Ferrari in '74, his comeback in '82, even his accident, I have seen proof of that myself.

It is such a shame that children today have access to so much brilliant, almost miraculous, education facilities and yet seem more stupid than ever before.
Perhaps this is the true inheritance of "democracy", an idiot has the same "power" as a genius on the net.
It is up to us to be able to differentiate between them.
I use the time waster method, "Do I have time to answer this person?"
"Is it worth the effort?"
"Will they post the same thing tomorrow, next month, next year?"
I have quickly learned who not to bother with, and filtered them.

This guy absolutely nails it.
Back in 2008, I remember watching the Brazilian GP on tv. It was about teatime and I remember sitting with a miniature pork pie in my hand. I was too wrapped up in the action to actually put the pie to my lips and take a bite from it. My heart was in my mouth throughout. It sank when Vettel overtook Hamilton. It leapt up again wjen Glock slowed down, and it sank again seeing Massa's tears on the podium.
To me, this represents everything great about Formula 1. But moments like these are so few and far-between now it's just wrong.

The article could have been written by any of the sensible posters here. Captures what we've been saying for years.
I keep telling a lot of people that Seb's championships will never get recognition as a direct result of the current farce that is f1.
The viewing numbers are dwindling and will continue to do so until something is done about the useless tyres.
WTCBU makes a valid point, they've pandered to the casual fans at the expense of petrolheads and we are suffering as a result.
How many times have we heard, save the tyres, do not race him. Protect your tyres.

Interesting to hear Fernando's view on Sebastian's ability in the pre-race build up.
He said words to the effect, "I don't know how good he is, we will have to wait and see him in a less competitive car.
If he can't get sevenths and eighths with that it will probably be even worse than now!"
Eddie Jordan and David Coulthard commentated on the apparent bitterness, going on to speculate that Vettel will be in a Ferrari some time fairly soon and Alonso knows it.

I've said the same about Seb, I would like to see how good he is when the package isn't that competitive.
If he can do the same, there will be no doubts whatsoever remaining
