To try and move us away from the endless circular debates about AVB, formations, team selections, desire, etc, I though it would be useful to look at a couple of areas of our squad that are going to require bolstering with younger options over the next couple of years.
Regardless of your opinion as to the quality of our players in these positions, it would be fair to say that defence and midfield are generally well covered, with a good number of options, all of whom are a good age. We could, of course, do with a new LB, but this is more of an immediate concern than the two positions I want to highlight.
Goalkeeper
Striker
Goalkeeper - Lloris is our clear number one, but Friedel, while relatively reliable, is clearly feeling the effects of age and is has a completely different style of goalkeeping in comparison to our number one. The defence has to completely change the way they play when Friedel is in goal because he isn't as adept at rushing out to snuff out through balls, etc.
Our scouting network should be looking at young goalkeeper with similar characteristics to Lloris who doesn't mind serving an apprenticeship for the next few years.
Striker - are three current first-team options are 28, 29 and 31. Not over the hill by any means, but we certainly need to start planning for the future unless we want a big hole in our squad in a couple of years time.
We need a strong, mobile striker who is also adept in the build up phase. Someone who doesn't mind getting limited playing time for a couple of years, but who has the necessary potential to be a legitimate challenger for a first team place at the end of that period.
Lets say we have £3 million for a goalkeeper and £6 million for a striker. Who would be your choices, and why?

I think we can now safely say with certainty that the 1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1 formation employed yesterday doesn't work very well.

I'm hoping for a more adventurous set up at home against United, 1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,2 perhaps.
