John Flanagan

Heard reports on the radio today that Martin O’Neill plans to meet up with Liverpool’s John Flanagan to see if he would be interested in playing for Ireland. Flanagan has already represented England at U-21 level and rejected an approach from current U-21 Ireland manager Noel King a few years ago.

Thoughts please? Would he be a welcome addition?

I think the jury is still out on Flanagan. His career started promisingly but has taken a backward step in recent years and hasn't really come on as well as he and Liverpool had probably hoped

"The lad has a great attitude. I don't remember all these times that Mirallas and Deloufeu skinned him."

I do, it was at least 3 times - a bit worrying and far too easy

"I do remember all the times he stepped in and anticipated to get the ball and use it well though." he did do that too, a big improvement.

"I also remember him overlapping well. It was his run that led to us winning the corner for our first goal as Gerrards pass was knocked out."

That too

There was a lot of good and it was a big improvement. but also some worrying signs as well.

on balance a good day for Young Flanangan

Curtis Davies……
Mark Noble……..
Patrick Bamford….who?
Kyle McNaughton….
Mark Bunn…….We already have enough keepers not playing regularly
Nathan Redmond………. …yes please!
Conor Wyckham……….No thanks. Over-hyped and over-rated
Gary O'Neil……..isn’t he in his 30’s?

I'd agree with those assertions Rover except for Curtis Davies whose much improved and is coming of age now at 28. That said we have a lot of centre backs at present but O'Shea and Dunne are on the way out in their early to mid 30's so Davies would be worthwhile recruiting.

Patrick Bamford is a chelsea reserve on loan at MK Dons, decent player and has already played for us at u21's but only last month joined up with the english u21's so I wouldnt break a sweat trying to get him back if he's prone to jumping ship so easily. Wyckam of course played for O'Neill so if he wants him fair enough but again another player I wouldnt be too pushed about, he certainly has no future prospects with England!!

Flanagan had a decent game at the weekend. Too easily beaten by wide men when on the turn though. One on one he was poor. Other than that he done quite well, you can see he can read the game well. . One of his better games. Wouldn't be a bad option for the south.

Davies would walk into the Ireland team.

I watched him at Championship in recent years and he was always the best player on the pitch by a mile.

The lad has a great attitude. I don't remember all these times that Mirallas and Deloufeu skinned him.

He had a good game, and I can understand why he was praised by Gerrard, but he was caught out a number of times, especially in the second half when Deulofeu came on.
