Stupidest Idea Ever?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formula1/25310466

Seriously, who thought that up? This is worse than when they tried to change the points system to 25-20-15.
I've generally tried to defend modern F1, but if they just plan on making it a lottery then I may just give up. Why on Earth would they propose such a change? It wouldn't have made any difference to Vettel's dominant 2011 & 2013 Championships, and 2010 & 2012 already had tense final races.
Completely arbitrary that the final race should be given such precedence, they may as well pick the winner out of a hat now.

The idea of picking your own number seems pointless. Don't mind it in MotoGP but in F1 it’s all about having the No. 1 on the front of your car. Imagine it's just a marketing decision; they’ve seen the success of Rossi 46 or Marquez 93.

Cost cap is sensible, but will likely have numerous workarounds that benefit the big teams. A more even split of prize-money would probably solve that problem a bit better.

At least when you backdate it, it means that Hamilton never really won a title. Good change after all!

(Before anyone starts, I'm kidding).

To be honest, it's such a stupid rule that it probably warrants 2 threads for discussion!

Would attributing some points scoring system to qualifying / fastest laps etc. been a slightly more normal option (not that I'm in favour of this btw).

Or just fore-go the race all together and just stick with a few practice sessions and let everything be decided in qualifying.

Not that I care for him but I think that it would be absolutely crazy if Vettel was 49 points in the lead going into the last race of the season, he gets taken out and then his nearest rival wins and takes the title. I won't deny that I'd be happy to not see Vettel win but the double points makes a mockery of the few preceding races to the final race. A team might work really hard through the ENTIRE season and get their guy to a 40 point lead only for it to be taking away by the comedy race at the finale of the season.

Really though, what a balmy idea....

mikey bosun

must agree with you mate the double points idea is riddled with flaws -

to be honest it sounds like one of bernies little jolly japes to wind the teams up ( he normally does that after a season ends )
not saying it wont happen but i have my doubts if it actually will --

For such 'technically minded people', has any thought gone into this double points fiasco?? Seems like a knee-jerk solution to trying to make more things more exciting, rather than putting in some thought to give more intelligent options.

what could happen is that you could end up with a 'undeserving champion'. 2 drivers could have the same number of race wins, one of them could have one more podium finish, maybe a couple of more lower placed finishes, so although more consistent, loses out because of the double whammy rule.

I think we can all accept that there has always been a certain level of 'farceness' in F1, but essentially the best car and driver combination ended up with the title - this points rule could make a mockery of that.

After reading through some comments on the BBC website on this particular topic, one poster made a very good point. The teams have decided against the idea of having a mandatory (or minimum, I can't remember which) 2 pits stops per races and they also decided against increasing the minimum weight limit of the cars to aide the heavier drivers. However, they've agreed to having double points for the final race...

Now I don't know how much say teams ultimately have in the overall decision making of F1 but if they are big players in the rule making, not only should we be beating Bernie round the head with a big stick but all the teams too.

Overall though, the reason behind this rule change pretty much sums up all that is wrong with F1 - "to heighten interest in the conclusion of the World Championship". Would not attempting to make ALL of the season interesting rather than just the final race be a more prudent issue to address...? Just a thought...

I don't know what the answer is to making the racing more fun to watch, I really don't. One possible solution, in my eyes, would be to seriously cut down on aero - yes I know that F1 is predominantly about aero and making cars go round corners at seemingly impossible speeds but spectators want action too. Anyway, this is slightly off topic. The fact that this sport is getting more farfetched has made my decision easier about whether or not I will watch next year.

It is a truly stupid idea. What makes the last race so special. Idiocy at it's finest.

It's Ferrari behind this because Alonso would have been champion in 2012, if the rule was in force
