I know tonight's game was utterly meaningless, however I was very happy that for the first time in 18 months AVB actually changed things up significantly in midfield (putting aside his brief flirtation with 442 last season)
I've not hidden my dissatisfaction with playing 2 or even 3 DMs (depending on what you want to call Paulinho) for almost a year now.
I don't think its the way forward playing at home. No creativity, no vision, no intelligent movement. Nothing. Its playing with the handbrake on. Its nonsense!!!
Today,
One DM (Dembele) and 2 attack minded CMs (Holtby and Siggy). This is the way forward for home games. Anything less attacking and we will continue to suffer.
Long may it continue (not holding my breath though )
Change of formation from AVB

Super Tottenham
My reference was to our home games where we look bereft of ideas

i think AVB was always working towards his 4-3-3 style he had at porto.
one holder, 2 (sandro) more attacking cms (take your pick). one winger on the correct side (lennon), and one inverted winger (chadli), and a striker.
i think he went
------------dm-------dm--------------
------------------am--------------------
in order to solidify us up to begin with - its easier to build attacking play off a solid base.

*should be… one holder (sandro),

Maybe so chronic but it doesn't take 18 months to solidify... Except you're mercury
I expect AVB to revert to type for home games ie 2 DMs, but I really hope not. That's just not the way forward.
DM - Sandro/Dembele/Capoue
Then 2 of
Siggy
Lamela
Holtby
Eriksen
Simples.
Away then Paulinho and Capoue come into the picture for these 2 midfield roles...

the thing is playing 2 dms is not necessarily a bad thing as long as they are good on the ball and release good quick ball early.
the problem is that dembele wasn't doing that. but he is starting to do it more now.

He didn't change the formation. Still a 433/4231

We've played a 1-2 in CM quite a few times this season. I get your point though

I think if we played 2 of Sigurdsson, Lamela and Eriksen as attack minded midfielders it would give us a weak midfield and we would struggle to control the midfield.
One of these three with Holtby could possibly work though due to his energy and work rate.

I have no problem with playing a fluid formation. 4-2-31 is fine it is the tactics that accompany that.
Its embarrasing that its now been figured out but if you play the way avb does which is to control and counter you need wingers on there right side. It is a horrific idea to use the silly inverted wingers and make the play narrow therefore foresaking any space your players have to run into.
It is absoloutely unforgiveable to play that way when the majority of your players possess huge pace you want them to run and split the opponents backline. At that point then clever players like sigģy and eriksen can player clever balls through the gaps.
This is why I get so negative because it is simple stuff.
