Inverted winger is not the problem!

Its playing inverted wingers with wing backs that don't over lap.

Slow CBs playing a high line

and CMs that don't know their roles.

Who is the defensive mid? Sandro

but when Sandro is injured is it Paulinho, Dembele or Holtby

Apart from Sandro...none of our other CM options protect the back four. Capoue would have been that option but with injuries he is playing as a CB.

AVB should have changed his combinations accordingly.

When Sandro is injured Capoue has to play in his role and he has to play a CB in a CB role..even if it's Zeki Fryers, Kaboul, Chiriches

If we don't have a LB that gets forward naturally then a winger/ Left footed player must be on the left.

Simple ideas that would have made our play more effective in my opinion.

Agree, I feel we got a taste of how effective inverted wingers with wing backs can be in our game against Norwich. Obviously with the injury to Rose it hasn't been possible to play this system properly, and for me one of AVB's main failures this season was the amount of time it took for him to realise this,

That was AVB's problem. He had a rigid system that only worked with certain players. You have to let the players be the guiding rule on how you play. It's simply square pegs in round holes. To be fair to Redknapp he did play to our strengths. He recognised that we were a team full of pace so we were set up to counter and we did it superbly. AVB seems like he's swallowed the perfect managers handbook. A way of playing if you have perfect players. Football isn't like that, and I'm afraid on some level it has exposed the non footballer in him. The best managers adapt to their playing staff, the club's identity and has a certain level of flexibility. AVB didn't do that. Let's face it, he's had one good season in football with someone else's team. Beyond that, he's a failure.

Paulinho looks better as a number 10 than as a deeper midfielder or defensive midfielder. He played just behind the striker in the United game, and it worked well with Soldado. The same can be said of Holtby playing behind the striker than anywhere else. It was bizarre then to see against Liverpool Dembele play there out of the blue when he's never even been tested there before.

AVB just never had much of a clue about our midfield frankly.

Also playing a high defensive line and 2 defensive midfielders as well as other midfielders who like to come deep to get the ball (oooh matron) means that we were over crowded in the middle third. This is why we create very little.

I hope we play 4-4-2 tomorrow as we don't have any DM. Even when they are fit we should only play 1 DM and 2 up front.....like 4-1-3-1-1
