away support

magnificent, yet again - even stoke agree:

the best part of 5,000 traveling to stoke on a wednesday night the week before christmas in appalling conditions to watch the reserves in a cup no one really cares about...how many other clubs could manage that?

I agree, old Trafford and the etihad both have the same issue with that - the perception of the atmosphere differs massively depending on where you sit. Tv doesn't really show what the atmosphere is truly like either as it depends where they out the mikes and how loud they turn it up. I have a friend who used to work for transworld sport and his job was setting up the mikes, there were a few grounds where they used to artificially raise the mike volume to make it sound better than it actually was (and to drown out away fans)

True Melton - They faded the sound out a lot of times at Villa and tonight as when I watched the reruns quite a few of the United chants with obscenities were faded. Not surprising it was those songs in the main though

Away support do us proud all the time. I think the issues at OT are to do with acoustics.

It was fantastic - let's hope this continues, no matter where our league form takes us.

The most I heard the Stoke fans was when they were shouting $hit, $hit, $hit when our fans were shouting United, United, United.

Think they just wanted to join in with our exemplary chanting. Bless their little cotton rugby socks <>

About this discussion re: atmosphere in grounds... I actually think that it is a result (not exclusively) of one major positive; that football grounds are more family friendly places these days.

Sure, we like stadiums to have atmosphere, but there are some positives about the way grounds fill up these days.

The problem with OT is the cameras and mic's are probably closer to the away support than the stretford end. Go watch a game in the top tier of the stretford end and everyone is standing and singing for 90 minutes, unfortunately the mics are miles away from this part of the stadium so on tv all you can hear is the sound of prawn sandwiches getting eaten from everyone in the fergie end

The atmosphere at OT is abysmal aside from the Stretty

In the South Stand there are areas where you get funny looks if you sing along because you are the only one singing. North Stand isn't much better, nor the East.

Nothing to do with acoustics for me. Most fans just don't sing aside from big games.

Agree with this in terms of the general atmosphere at OT (and other grounds). But the point to do with acoustics is that every game at Old Trafford there are 6000 fans who stand and sing in the Stretty Tier 2 and the noise doesn't really travel.
