I just watched "the huddle" on Cricinfo and listened to Mark Butcher's comments on Alistair Cook's captaincy. Essentially, Butcher was of the opinion that Cook currently does not have the feel for the game to be effective as captain. Having watched a good deal of the first four tests and being unimpressed with Cook's tactics, especially when bowling to the tail, I think Butcher has a point.
This raises a larger question, however, and that is if Cook is not to continue as captain, who will replace him? Looking at the current England team, I can't see any natural replacements, especially now that Prior is out the team, even if that is temporary. Will a lack of good captaincy be an enduring problem in the near future?

Wasn't Ian Bell Warwickshire skipper for a short while?

Maybe england could ask de Villiers to come and play for them? That would solve the problem of the captain, batsman and wicketkeeper...

Broad maybe? but id prefer a batsman to be captain.

Pietersen hands down. Aggressive and positive. Even though he can be selfish and arrogant at times he is a winner and exactly what England need. Broad would find juggling captaincy along with his bowling difficult. But one thing for sure is Cook is no captain!

when was the last time 2 settled teams had a competitive series? I for one cant remember any in the recent past. Its disappointing to see this, but Most teams are becoming home track bullies.
These days its like impossible to even draw matches in alien conditions let alone win.

Before this series I thought Eng and SA are two teams that compete in all conditions. Now only SA remain the most competitive team in the world. Maybe teams should look at how SA cricket is structured and see why their youngsters are performing so quickly in international cricket.

Broad should be captain. KP shouldn't be. Surprised they ever let him back in the side.

Pieterson would be my last choice.
Only option would be Broad, with Bell as VC.
Cook has lost one from six series. He needs to improve but deserves time.
This series has been a nightmare but lets put things in perspective... 3 have won the last three Ashes series!
