Its 1958 because thats when the north/south split in the bottom division was ended.

I guess the people who did the stats felt this was the fairest way of assessing all clubs (as lower league results would be skewed before then because they would all face different teams).

The answer is obvious: average league position because you can collect all of those points in a season and another club could win the title.

And also it's a tenny bit easier to amass points in the lower divisions hence why league positions done on a 1 to 92 basis.

Isn't it generally worked out as though your points had been amassed as 3 points for a win, otherwise the points obviously mean nothing.
