Vidic's departure- the next captain?

With the news that Vidic has decided to leave the club in summer it got me thinking that the club will be losing the only genuine leader we have got in our squad.
I look at the squad and I see a lack of a proper captain material player especially in the back line. It can be widely assumed that Rio and Evra (our deputy captains) will be either moved on or given a squad role next season (as for Rio this season itself).
The best bet would be either Jones, Rafael or Van Persie. I think Phil Jones has the potential to be a great leader in future. But the problem is that his style of play means he will always be missing huge chunks of the season. Putting his body on the line etc. Like a certain John Terry.

Rafael is another player who I see as a captain. He is fiesty, he is first choice player and although he has struggled to reach the heights of last season but that can be said of almost the entire squad. He is one of the best right backs in the league, loves the club and has been here for a long time.

But the best choice of captain for me is RVP. He is BY FAR OUR BEST AND MOST IMPORTANT PLAYER. More important than Rooney or Carrick for me. He is experienced, has leadership qualities, was Arsenals best captain since Vieira and our most consistent performer since he has been at the club. Now unless we are signing someone like Vidal or Xavi next season I would prefer the captainship to go to RVP.

For me Rooney isnt captainship material. Also it would depend a lot when he would sign the contract and even if he signs I wouldnt want someone who threatened to leave the club twice being made captain.

We will really miss Vidic and his leadership and defensive qualities. Lets hope we sign a world class or thereabouts center back like Mangala, Benatia etc to replace him and Rio in summer.

How the feck is RVP captain material?
-------------------------------------------------
Because he was Arsenal's best captain since Viera and comes across as captain material.

And why would you want a captain so high up the pitch? How is he supposed to talk to the players at the other end of the pitch during the game?
---------------------------------------------
Go tell that to Zidane and Di Natale

We don't really have anybody in the ranks that is captain material except Giggs, Evra and Rio and there all past it.

You lost all credibilty in the post when you mentioned Giggs as captain material

I would rather the tea lady was captain than Rooney.

I'd give it to Valencia.......................non-playing captain Ryder Cup style!

A lot of emphasis is placed on Captaincy in the UK.

It is overhyped.

Now, i am no fan of Rooney-Me and him getting the captaincy as a condition of his pay rise is objectionable but he is the most senior player at the club who is a regular starter (Giggs is not).

Personally, i'd go for DDG but i won't lose any sleep if RooneyMe gets it.

The notion that RVP - who has only been at the club for five secs, who is injury prone (and yet you slight Jones on this), who is past 30 is farcical.

Agree with Red Cog. I'd go with DDG as captain but if it was Rooney i'd be fine with it.

I love RVP but they guy might be off in the next couple of seasons.

I also said Giggs wasn't an option because he was past it.

Zidane and Di Natale were up and down the pitch weren't they? Do you watch footy?

Captain for Arsenal? Ok we'll take the lead of a club that hasn't won anything for years and hasn't had a back bone since Viera and Keown etc

Giggs was never captain material even when he was in his prime. So you are wrong there to mention his name.

Zidane and Di Natale up and down the pitch? Since when? Both are facking forwards just like RVP. And RVP comes up and down often to defend set pieces. So again your observation is wrong.

So only winning trophies makes you a great captain
By that logic Steven Gerrard is a crap captain because he has won fack all apart from the CL and the odd cup here and there?
