If RVP doesn't leave in the summer

How do United move forward as a team formation wise? Because Rooney, Mata and Januzaj are going to be here next season as well. 4-4-2 is outdated we know that besides United don't have the type of central midfielders in the squad to play 4-4-2 effectively nowhere near enough pace or enegry in there and not enough movement or guile either.

If Van Persie stays (and assuming United actually manage to sign at least two class central midfielders) would a 4-3-1-2 prhaps get the best of out the Mata, Rooney and RVP? With the addition of two top quality, energetic, quick and skilful central midfelders to perhaps play alongside Carrick (or maybe even Fellaini) and the addition of a fast, quality left back who can get up and down the line all day and provide width when required along with Rafa on the other side it would allow Mata to play in the hole between midfield and the forward line and allow both RVP & Rooney to operate up front. With some quality central midfield additions (players of the ilk of Gundogan, Kroos etc...big if i know but that is the quality of midfielder the club absolutely must go flat out to try and attain no messing about with trying to get them on the cheap etc). With the quality of the new central midfield Rooney would no longer need to keep dropping back so deep to help out the current inept central midfield and could stay further forward where technically he should be more effective...he does tend to score lots of goals when played solely up front.

How about a team and formation along this lines for next season if the Glazers are truly going to back the manager:-

............DDG...........
Rafael..Smalling..Jones..Shaw
..Carrick..Gundogan..Kroos...
.............Mata...........
........RVP.......Rooney.....

I don't really see any other formation that will truly suit the palyers we have if Rooney, RVP & Mata are all at the club next season. Januzaj can play as a number 10 when Mata is injured or needs rotated, Hernandez & Welbeck would get more chances up front as we would be playing with two up top and young, fast fullbacks could provide the width in the knowledge they have three central midfielders to cover when they bomb forward.

What is clear is that if these players are all with the club next season they need to be played in their best position as often as possible and that just isn't happening often enough at the moment in my opinion with the static, one paced and one dimensional central midfield being one of the main reasons why.

Unfortunately - even if we signed Messi, Ronaldo, Iniesta, Kroos alongside Mata, Rooney, Januzaj we still have the problem of the manager - Moyes - he would stifle all ingenuity, skill and invetiveness. He is hard wired to play 442 - ball out wide and cross it in - the only variation being to lump it over the midfield to a Fellaini style player. Moyes with his oft written about negativity is the problem.

How dare you say such evil things about the second coming of Fergie!!

Shame on you

Except that he tended to play 4-2-3-1 at Everton

I kind of knew this would turn out to be yet another debate about Moyes' inflexibility and apparently unattainable players rather than focus on the actual question asked. The main point of the post was to ask what formation suits playing Mata, Rooney & RVP in the same team best if RVP is here next season and that the rumblings of him wanting out are actually false. No-one has come up with any formation that would be the best one to play as usual it turns into Moyes bashing and laughing at anyone who dares question that United might actually sign players above Conference level because they haven't qualified for the CL. Let's face it no other team who haven't qualified for the CL have ever been able to sign quality world class players have they? Maybe i just dreamt that the likes of Man City and Monaco actually did.

Mata can play out wide no problem but NOT as a traditional winger.
We need to lose the idea that "wide" men have to be old skool wingers who will get down the byline and whip cross after cross in.
If you look at other top teams they have wide players who are no longer old style wingers. Nasri and Silva as the perfect example at city. They have a flexible enough system to use them as an outlet out wide but not force them to try to get down the wing and whack in aimless crosses like Young and Valencia do.
Look at Robbens performance against Arsenal. He provided width as an outlet but not once did he just whack in a cross. he often came inside and linked up play with midfield and forwards and played cute passes. Mata is prefectly capable of this.

Cech
Alvez-Pique-Kompany-Shaw
Vidal-Pogba
Bale-Messi-Ronaldo
Ibra

I think that is how United will line up next year.

Careful now.

There are many of the more juvenile, sheep-like, contributors on here that would believe such a fantasy.

We wouldn't want to see such people being fed.
