Graeme Smith retires

Smitty has announced his retirement, after 117 test matches. He is, after all, only 33!

Not counting the final test where he plays his last inning tomorrow, he has amassed 9257 runs at an average of about 49. He must not care a lot about records to not try and reach 10K runs.

Battered England (avg 57), especially in England (avg 68), over the years.

Less comfortable at home (avg 42) than on the road (avg 55).

Not a pleasant sight as a batsman, but remained effective over a long career.

Excellent record as a test captain: W-L 53-28.

Cocky or plain confident, fans have their opinions.

Saying again, he is only 33!!

I respect all u guys opinion and it's nice to get different views. Let me play devil's advocate.. So Smith didn't announce before the start of series, then first test, second test n finally does it in the middle of 3rd. This series he struggled, was dropped in last ODI.. He one day career was over n he didn't wanted the same in tests may be..

He could have moved from captaincy and just continued as batsmen since he is only 33 for few years.. Regarding injuries, I have seen fast bowlers continue with worse injuries than him. So as a batsmen he could have played for another few years. Was it insecurity or some other reason?

Excuse some typing errors cos my phone reception sucks right now.. All u guys reasoning makes sense and I am just saying that may be his current form n Aussies giving him tough time escalated his decision.. Also remember that he was dropped in ODI last time by ABDV

Another reason might be because SA could be on the way down imo if they are not careful.

Steyn is still world class and Philander is very good but Morkel has been poor for quite some time. They have lost the best ever all rounder in Kallis and now have to find a player to either score his runs or take his wickets.

Not Gonna happen. The backup bowlers i've seen in this series dont look up to it yet and they still dont have a spinner.

This is not a dig as when he took over as captain they werent the best team and were still a team in progress. Maybe he just doesnt have the energy to try and re-build again.

Yh I agree, SA are definately on their way down. It was always going to be the case after kallis retirement. And coming to steyn, he is not growing any younger. Philander has been found out imo. with that pace, on a pitch that has nothing for swing and seam bowling he is very easy to handle. Australia have played him well.

Now all of a sudden, SA top 4 look shaky. Peterson still is a bit iffy, Jp doesnt look that great, and faf is still learning.

I think its too much on the shoulders of AB and Amla, and we are going to start seeing that in the result the start producing from now on. IMO Australia are on their way up, atleast for the next 2 years.

How is it that Warner is scoring so heavily and so consistently now? He is looking as dangerous as Sehwag at his peak.

i hope smith gets a duck for his poor decison to retire..He will one day look back and regret this decision. 10,000 runs milestone was just some matches away... And he's retiring international cricket but intends to play domestic matches.what a foolish decision..

warner has been a revelation. has played a strong part in the 5-0 ashes and will play a crucial role in aus securing a 2-1 series win.

Graeme Smith aka the England Captain Slayer!

2003 - drew 2-2 vs England - Nasser Hussain relinquished his captaincy.

2008 - won 2-1 vs England - Michael Vaughan relinquished his captaincy

2012 - won 2-0 vs England - Andrew Strauss relinquished his captaincy.
