I see a lot of people on the other thread seem to have taken issue with us offering Wilshere £80k a week, and some people on Twitter saying Ramsey's mooted £100k a week is too much for him given he's signed only in December 2012 on a long term.
Whilst I tend to agree with the speed at which we've done this perhaps being a bit hasty, the reality is that these same people would be moaning that we always sell our best players if these two left and that's exactly what would happen if we don't offer them more cash. Just imagine, Ramsey was on far less before, we don't offer him a new deal on time and what's gonna happen? He'll fúck off to City or elsewhere like many before him. Don't give me the 'He's arsenal through and through' crap as we've said that about too many players before, just face facts:
We need to be paying players competitive wages to ensure they stay at Arsenal. I'm very happy it looks like we're finally doing that as it means we will be able to keep em long term and hopefully build a successful side in the future around em.
The key now is using homegrown talent like this to build a good spine, and adding world class players this summer is paramount to ensuring success. Whilst this summer could see numerous departures due to contract expiries or lack of game time, keeping players like Ramsey and Wilshere, and Per and Rosicky as we saw yesterday, for the long term, means that we shouldn't have a star player departure that's ruined many a summer after a relatively decent season and has prevented us from moving forward so many times.

It's catch 22 - pay high now to semi unproven talent and they could do very well and be worth it or they'll flop and be tough to get rid of. Don't pay high and risk losing a future star as has happened so often in the past.
My problem is not so much offering certain players high wages it's offering guff ones higher wages than they deserve which Arsenal have a recent history of doing.
Truth is top players now expect to get silly money and if we want to finally start holding on to our stars we need to pay accordingly.
However our wage bill is way too high considering the level of our squad - few established stars, mostly youngish talents with plenty still to prove and a lot of time to gain a steady wage increase should they deserve it.
We need to increase the gap in wage between our stars and our squad players/youth.
Our wage bill is on par or close to some of Europe's most elite clubs and we still need big money signings so will increase significantly over the summer (if we sign the players we need to) yet our team is way behind when it comes to performance and has been for some time.
Lets hope these big earning youngsters step up and prove they're worth it as if they're not we'll have trouble shifting them!

I agree. If they did go because they got more wages at City or Chelsea ala Cole and Nasri we would ask for Wengers head....

Ramsey was on 50K per week anyway. Hardly Chump Change.
My issue is that we hand out these big contracts on the basis of a few good months of football. It used to be that players had to play well for a good season or 2 before getting a big hike in wages.
