News is that our left backs are out, which might just be a blessing in disguise.
Its important to take opponents strengths into consideration when naming a starting line up. In the first leg we saw Robben tear Monreal a new one on that flank. He ALWAYS cuts inside which is awkward for a left back to deal with.
The solution?
Jenkinson/Sagna .. Per .. Kos .. Sagna/Flamini
By having a right footed player at left back, it would make it slightly easier to prevent him from cutting inside. Also if i can recall, Jenkinson had one of his best performances at the Alianz last year so i wouldn't hesitate to bring him in.

Does a left back have to be left footed?

There have been quite a few right footed players who have excelled on the left. However there are also loads who have struggled. I remember Lauren having to play at LB and having an absolute mare.
Also it will hinder attackwise. With the wide left attacker prone to cut inside we need the LB to go beyond him. Right footers on the left will cut in, which clutters up the pitch.

I know what you mean, left footers would provide more width when attacking. But if we play Vermaelen at left back, is he much of an attacking threat anyways? if thats the case id take my chances on trying to nullify their wingers.

clichy was right footed, for that reason I say we never play a right footed player there again

Lahm was great at LB for a while
but to be fair he's great wherever he plays

And Gallas was good there for Chelsea for about 18 months

it amazes me that professional footballers are unable to kick the ball with both feet!!
for instance rvp practiced using his chocolate leg half way through his career.....what was he doing since he was a kid
point I'm trying to make is a fullback who can play with both feet can play on either side

Professional players "weaker foot" is still stronger than an average mans stronger foot. Someone one footed like Robben however, his right foot is actually quote bad. But it doesn't matter since his left does all the work. Much like Ronaldo the Brazilian not known for scoring headers.
