Date: Wednesday 12th March 2014.
Venue: The Valley, Charlton. - Kick Off 7.45 pm.
Since no one appears interested in putting up a match thread, I thought I'd better cobble something up myself for us talk about. Sorry if I've trod on anybodies toes in doing so.
Brief History.
Charlton were formed around 1905 and have more or less played at the Valley since 1919, although they did ground share with Crystal Palace for a while before moving back to the valley.
They are known as the "Addicks" which is thought to have originated from a local fish merchant, Arthur "Ikey" Bryan, who rewarded the team with free meals of haddock & chips.
They were managed by Chris Powell, until a few hours ago when their Belgium owner decided to sack him, which I suppose will either give the players a boost or hopefully for Town, will do the exact opposite and send them into complete shock.
Head to Head statistics.
Town have a poor league record at the Valley, which reads over the past 20 years: P10 - W2 - D2 - L6 - F8 - A15.
Having said that, Charlton's current form is woeful and has seen them plummet to the very bottom of the League with only 27 points from their 30 games played. However, they do have 3 games in hand over their nearest rivals Barnsley and Yeovil.
Their home form is: P14 - W4 - D4 - L6 - F12 - A16. So, although they haven't scored many goals at home, they haven't conceded too many either, although their 12 home goals is the lowest in the entire league.
Predictions.
Although they managed to beat high flying QPR 1-0 a couple of weeks back, I believe that the sacking of Chris Powell will have a negative effect on the players and I am tipping Town to sneak a 1-0 win, which will continue their WLWLWL...run, although in doing so, I hope this run ends after tomorrows match, otherwise Blackburn will do us on Saturday and we don't want that do we?

Sounds like it was a match to forget although I'll take an away point any day, especially against a team who are desperate for points.
We also kept a clean sheet although it would appear MR set the side up not to lose, which also limited our chances of winning.
But a point away on a sh-t playing surface against a side desperate for points wasn't a bad return, particularly since we are still suffering from injuries to key players such as Lynch, Vaughan & Gerrard etc.
We are now on 44 points, which is 15 clear of third from bottom Yeovil, plus more importantly, we are now above our rivals from down the road.
So with 11 games to go and 33 points still to play for, we should walk the 60 points I'm tipping we'll end up with.

Suppose steadying the ship was Robins' priority, 0-0 away is ok...could have been worse if we'd lost again.
The aim this season was always to 'consolidate'..and after 4 seasons of extreme end of season tension I'm quite okay with a 'boring' end of season run in.

I'm sure that Robins will be playing some of our academy lads once we are 'safe'....2 more wins perhaps

According to MR he considered the performance a major improvement following Saturday's defeat at Doncaster. He also added that "I thought the players showed the desire" whilst the Examiner's Doug Thompson stated "Town showed true grit to take away a point"
Well that's the very least they can do in EVERY game, especially when fans (440 went to Charlton) spend their hard earned cash to follow them.

First half quite even although Charlton seemed to have the better chances but didn't have the goal radar on last night, 2 or 3 fizzing shots in the first half that from the other end of the ground looked like heading into the bottom corner. Town meanwhile had a couple of shots that stung the goalies hands but nothing you wouldn't expect him to save.
2nd half...dreadful! One good save by Smithies from Sordell when through 1 on 1, 1 chance for Nahki Wells when he rounded the keeper but although he managed to get the shot on target it didn't have the power to beat the defender who cleared easily. Smithies dropped the ball into the net from a cross, luckily the ref spotted the challenge on him although he's got to be stronger than that.
Final whistle couldn't come soon enough, cold...bored...sober(ish)
1 poor pitch, 2 poor teams.
Oh and I knew Robins would be delighted with the way town 'scraped' for that point but by heck Mark you need to raise your expectations a bit higher than that when playing bottom of the league
