Is that we, collectively, as a board, clearly don't know anything.
For what seems like years we were crying out for Sir Alex to go 4231 and play an interchangeable three behind the striker. Moyes has done it several times this season (including against Liverpool), and as it turns out, once again the big guy was right because it doesn't work.
Then last night we see a team that would have had us all shaking out heads in despair last season. Valencia Giggs Welbeck on the left 442 .
All the things we used to cry about!
Turns out to be our best system. Might aswell close up shop now boys and girls.
The disappointing truth

It's the tactics that go with the formation though to be fair

I've posted this a few times, 4-2-3-1 looks nice on paper and is very much in vogue but we can't play well with it. Van Persie gets isolated, we sit too deep, there is no ability to counter attack and there are no runs from midfield.
We play much better with a 4-3-3 or 4-3-1-2. We have the players to be comfortable in those formations.

I don't think we can move to a 4-2-3-1 until we have a more mobile LB and a CM that can link the defence with attack.

...............
It doesn't work if the midfield two sit directly in fron of the defence for 90 minutes.
It will work if they get up field and press with some kind of urgency.
