I'm a British guy living in Toronto. I just went to watch Toronto FC play their first home game of the season.....with Jermain Defoe upfront playing his second game for them...... He scored 2 goals in his first game and they won 2-1... He scored the only goal today and they won 1-0...
What's with the really negative attitude of Brits (press as well) toward British footballers that go to the MLS? Yes we know it's not the Premier League but it really smacks of little kids getting upset with their friends for liking someone else....just because they leave England doesn't mean they've given up on life and don't want to try anymore!
It's a new challenge and they might actually like it. Plus (some) get rewarded very nicely. The British attitude is basically they have given up and are settling for something inferior.
Oh..... And then there's the people that get really pi55ed off with the 'soccer' .......well kids that term was actually made in the UK from shortening 'Association Football'....stop the hating of the MLS because last time we played them, I think we didn't beat them?(USA 1-1England)
Arrogance.....

Players go there for a last payday. Nothing wrong with that though

In some cases but I think the landscape is changing

MLS get players beyond there peak to raise awareness of the sport and improve the profile which is exactly where the Premiership was 20 years ago with past it players from abroad coming over.
While you are correct about soccer and the hate can be seen as odd I would point out that the phrase died a death quite a few years ago in the UK and is the equivalent of calling ten pin bowling skittles or Rugby Union Football.
Also you could look at the NFL for another reason for this. America call a national sport that doesn't involve much kicking football but will not use the original phrase for the sport in question. (Never forgiven American Football for making me stand watching a match for 2 hours+ without a single touchdown)

If a basketball player left the NBA to play in England I'm pretty sure the American press and supporters wouldn't be too kind about the player moving on to a
'new challenge'

I don't think it's arrogance at all. Simply average players go there and become superstars at that level and they get well paid for it too. It's not a secret.
The best American players leave to play at a better level in other countries.
Again not arrogance but they want to test themselves against better players and improve their game which should help the USA national side.
It looks to me like you want to force your opinion that the MLS is actually a great league with top players, onto people, when that's simply not the place, perhaps it's your misguided arrogance.

You just proved my point exactly......we'll done
Where exactly did I say it was a great league with great players? Defensive attitude backed up with fiction. You should work for a paper.
