Myth of the defensive high line...

Its not something you can coach in a season or less. It needs players to understand and anticipate oppositions passing. If you watch Barcelona at their best, the art of pressing is actually done by the second or third defender who cuts off the available pass to a team mate whilst one or two players harass the ball carrier.

It's not what Timmy has our guys doing and chasing balls like kids in a park.

If just one of these players forget to do their job it creates a massive gap for any decent passer to exploit. And this is what we are continously seeing. Even yesterday if Southampton had a better passer in the midfield those 'offsides' could have been one on ones with lloris.

It needs discipline and fitness to carry this out for a 90 minute game.

It depresses me how inept our coaching staff are. I see no pattern to our play. Either in attack or Defence.

We don't have a clue how to isolate defenders to give our speedy wingers one on ones.

The only thing that makes sense for our team against Liverpool would be Half pitch press. Let liverpools defenders have the ball in their half. Put one man o Gerrard but the rest of the team should drop back into our half and leave no pass options and no space for through balls because our backline would be applying a deeper line.

As much as yesterdays result was great to see. Rather than celebrate beating Southampton at home like we won the FA Cup I would rather Timmy concentrates on the real problems with our combinations and defensive tactics.

It seems the media and a few fans think management is shouting 'enthusiasm' and gritting teeth in gilet. If it was that easy. We would all be managing Spurs. I don't have all my badges either. I wish I could get given a multi-million pound job and playing staff worth 100s of millions just because I'm best mates with Levy.

Sherwood gets no sympathy from me at all. He needs to up his game tactically and strategically. I have seen none of this soo far.

on another note: Thank God for Eriksen...best buy of our summer in my opinion and he needs to be given a central role. It's clear he is our best player and needs to play off a striker in a free role. No coincidence he has blended well with Ade and Soldado. A quality player can play with anyone. This is what he has shown.

What does llori offer this site apart from the input of a five year old?

I think parking the bus is a very bad idea vs Liverpool. We need to hit them were they are weakest and IMO that is in the midfield. Sure the likes of Gerrard/Henderson are doing wonders playing defense splitting balls to their attacking players, however I have seen them overrun time and time again. Swansea, Southampton, Hull, Fulham doing it to name a few. If we play a 3 man midfield at top form harassing the opposition then we may have a chance.

Realistically though, it will be 5-1 Liverpool.

Edinspur, I don't think it will be as one sided as last time.

But I think where you can potentially exploit is is between the lines, between Gerrard and defence.

But that high line really will play into our hands so who knows - A game we need to win if we want this title.

Daglish's I think you are underestimating how poor our defence has been under Sherwood. We are no better at the back than the likes of Cardiff, I just pray to god that we have a midfield of Sandro/Bentaleb/Siggs who limit your possession massively.

Everywhere you go

I'm sick of the stick Sherwood gets. He's now got more points this season in fewer games than avb

================

You and me both. Under AVB we saw excuses for failings, under Sherwood we seem to find (on here) excuses for the good things.

I know its well known i didnt like AVB but Tim (the novice) gets the best out of players we didnt see before.

I just think Tim deserves a shot at this job with the players he wants and the players he thinks he can get the best out of.

I know Bentaleb splits opinions but this guy was a total unknown before Tim took charge and he's now controlling games in the league and against decent European opposition, he's now the superstar in his native Algeria, and is already being valued at £10m.

Of course there are still negatives, like the time it takes us to get going sometimes, and the ongoing defensive problems, but Tim actually gives me confidence.

Chicken, how come you have been missing since pre-Chelsea mate?

Hi Edin,

I've probably been a bit elusive since around the Norwich game towards the end of February. To cut a long story short, it's been hard to get on JA during work hours lately, plus I suffered a family bereavement that hit me for 6 to be honest & just couldn't be a-rsed with it.

But life (& JA) goes on

No worries pal, just wondering. Sorry to hear that though.

I was off from post-cardiff for a good 2 weeks as well.

Correct, pressure us, forcing the midfield back and we have issues. However with the way we've been playing lately it could open you up to another pounding.

Also correct about Ilori. First class tool who had a personality bypass when he went from his old account to this one.
