Core problem

Having watched today's match and acknowledging that it was a good result, and a ok performance, the one thing that really strikes me is the scale of the work that Moyes/replacement has to get back to anything like the standard expected of United. Players of the Mata/Kagawa/Rooney/RVP/Januzaj, whilst admitting they can't all play together at the same time, provide top draw quality in the offensive third. The problem lies further back, where even today against an ok Villa side, I was as nervous as hell every time they had possession we really do lack strength, pace and nous in central midfield and through the defence. We look like conceding whenever the opposition attack. I'm not convinced going forward that we should play with out and out wingers as we need to accommodate as many of the afore-mentioned players as possible (plus all our wingers apart rom Januzaj are cack anyway!!)BUT the central midfield and entire defence needs looking at. Major reconstruction required me thinks!! lets learn how to defend again!! thoughts?

Yeah we need to sort out it at the back first and foremost, 1 or 2 cms and a reus type player

You write that as if you are the first to notice it. We've been screaming this out for the best part of five years now, more so the cmf position.

There is a reason why Moyes wants two new fullbacks, because ours are just not good enough. As much as I like Rafael he is still rash, inconsistent and injury prone.
If Moyes stays he WILL buy 2 fullbacks, Bookmark this !
Both quick and good going forward. Obviously Shaw would be great on the left.
We need a commanding CB to replace Vidic and I would go as far as to say we could do with a real classy ball playing CB to replace Rio. Smalling, Jones, Evans can be back up.If one is bought I expect Jones or Smalling to be his partner.

Our under-investment of the last few years have certainly caught up with us this season. SAF's retirement was brilliant timed - the wily old fox!!

How many players does everyone realistically feel need to come in??

I would say cover fro RB, 1xCD, 1xLB and one cover (Cos Buttner is truly awful). 2x CM and 1x adaptable, top drawer winger/wide midfielder

2 fullbacks - Shaw(unlikely) + ???
1 CB - Garay probably
1 CM/AM - Kroos/Gundogan/Lallana
1 Winger - Reus(?)
1 Young attacking potential star (sporting winger??)

Moyes seesm to prefer two midfielders sitting in front of back four - is that because of the apparent weaknesses on the defence do you think, or is it his preferred formation moving forward? If it is his preferred formation then should we be looking to someone better than Carrick/Fletcher/ Fellaini for that role?

Its the preferred formation for quite a few teams these days. It's not the United way IMO and I would prefer more energetic box to box players than a Fellaini and Carrick. Modric would have been a great buy. Can't believe how many people on these forums just didn't really rate him.

No. CM is the priority. The weak CM hinders the WHOLE team.
