A lot has been said this week about Wayne Rooney by fellow professional footballers, and Joey Barton. So I thought I would show just how important Wayne Rooney has been to our success at club and international level, and how he has single handedly carried us to unparalleled levels when we have utilised him as our main man.
We only ever tend to reach certain levels when we have Rooney as our main man. Here are the stats:
Manchester United
Season by Main Man Stats
Season 07/08- Ronaldo main man - We had a decent season but not spectacular. Only just managed to win the CL on penalties.
Season 08/09- Ronaldo main man - only won the league and poor CL final display
Season 9/10- Rooney main man - One of the most memorable seasons in our history. Stunning run to CL quarter finals and stormed to 2nd place in the league.
Season 010/011 - Berbatov main man - we laboured to the PL title, only winning it by a few points and lost the CL final. Berbatov was rightly stripped of his position as our main man after this season.
Season 011/012 - Rooney main man - stunning 2nd place finish in the league and took us to previously unchartered territory by qualifying for the prestigious Euro Liga. Then we came so close to trashing Athletic Bilbao out of the Euro Liga last 16.
Season 012/013 - RVP main man - Failed to win the league by over a 20 point margin. Failure to let Rooney be the main man really took its toll on our success, and on the manager, and he was rightly on his way.
Season 013/014 - Rooney main man - Season of a lifetime, Rooney carrying us single handedly to a stunning record PL points tally for us. And lead us to a position in the league that we once thought impossible. Very close to emulating our feat of qualifying for the Euro Liga, it may be unlikely but when you have Rooney as your main man, you have every chance of being in the Euro Liga
England
EURO2008 – Rooney main man – Arguably Rooney’s most effective international tournament. Pivotal in the qualifying in getting England to the position they ended up.
World Cup 2010 - Rooney main man – The golden generation, led by England’s greatest ever player. To say England would have won it if it wasn’t for a controversial decision is possibly crossing the line, or is it?
EURO2012 - Rooney main man – England outstanding for the first 2 matches as Rooney was being played in his most effective position. Once Hogdson or Capello or whoever, moved him from his most effective position for the 3rd game and quarter final, England dissimproved badly for the worse.
As you can see, when Rooney has been our main man for both Man Utd and England, our seasons are transformed. When we have let other players selfishly be the main player, we have struggled.

Update: England smash 1 past both Italy and Uruguay with Rooney as our main man, then only get a point against lowly Costa Coffee when Rooney is rested.

Rooney starring as our main man so far this season. He has been the main reason why our opening games have been so low scoring. I think this reflects his tracking back success rates and his ability to present the opposition the ball in order to set up other team mates for track backs. This season Rooney is not just number one for track backs. He is now number one for track back ASSISTS for team mates.

Should update this to include Everton with Rooney as the main man. They are indeed finding out that the conclusion of my study is correct, that the more Rooney you have, the more Rooney you get.

Jack,
Had Rooney's maturity level more closely matched his footballing skills then you might have an argument.
Also, remember that any time you try to paint anyone as the "greatest", regardless of the topic, you are standing over a potential giant sink-hole.
