I've looked back through the archives and can't see any evidence that Arsenal have ever been anything other than also-rans in the eyes of the continent, so I was wondering whether they'd actually be missed in Europe if they fail to grab 4th spot in the league?
The Sun pointed out that, other than Arsenal, Real Madrid are the only team to appear in every CL since 1998 (although I think this is, conveniently, factually incorrect), suggesting that they are part of the furniture in the competition.
However, being a punch-bag for the heavyweights every year is scant consolation, surely?
United, with their heritage in Europe back to the 1950s when English teams first entered, through to the purple era of European football in the 1960s, into the modern-day CL format, they will surely be the more notable omission.
Thoughts?
Have Arsenal ever won the European Cup?

There was historically a period when Arsenal were at their peak and could have made a good case for winning the European cup. Unfortunately, this tied in with the period when English football clubs were banned from playing in European competition, thanks largely to the actions of fans of a club which shall remain nameless.
