Arsenal v Man United (past or present)

There have been a few debates circulating about past and present players, and a lot of them seem to surround Arsenal and United players (for no apparent reason).

What would be interesting (I hope!) would be for all of us fans to pick the best two sides (no arguing!), until we have the best United and Arsenal line-ups possible.

For now, let's keep it to the PL era, selecting any player that represented either of the clubs since August 1992. Once we've done that, it would be interesting (I hope!) to pit the teams against each other and to determine which is the stronger team.

Feel free to make contributions for either club, as well as reasoned arguments against a player's inclusion.

Darren I would swap Irwin for Evra in his prime and move Ronaldo to the right and play Giggs on the left.

I know but these teams are based on talent are they not? He would thrive in a 4-2-3-1. Was one of the best CM's in the world for a stage.

Massively talented player but didn't really do it for United. Scholes, Keane, Robson, Ince, Carrick, even Fletcher and Butt all probably made bigger contributions.

If we're going purely on talent then RVP would be in with a shout.

I wouldn't disagree with that, MUDD. For me because I had to have Yorke and Cole in there I couldn't leave out Beckham.

I think your team might be more exciting to watch with Ronaldo and Giggs down either wing, but mine would be a better team.

Depends on the criteria. If it's based on talent and what they'd achieved at other clubs then Henrik Larrson would be in your 11 as well. But I'd imagine it's be based on how good they were for the club itself.

Things like this are tricky. Mainly because football is a game of partnerships and teamwork, and it's these combinations that win games and trophies. That being said, regularly the top sides have stand out geniuses in them. For example, Eric Cantona was better than Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole, but if I was going to play two of the three, I would always choose Yorke and Cole.

Picking a side based purely on individual ability, I would go for

Schmeichel
Irwin Ferdinand Stam Evra
Beckham Keane Scholes (Giggs)
Ronaldo Cantona (Giggs)

But if I wanted to focus on Uniteds most effective combinations, I'd go for

Schmeichel
G.Neville Ferdinand Vidic Irwin
Beckham Keane Scholes Giggs
Yorke Cole

I think on the whole, United's quality of players trumps Arsenals. It's why we've won so many more leagues than anyone else.

I will say this though, I think that Arsenal's Bergkamp-Henry front two is the perfect blend of individual talent + perfect combination,. Interesting that neither was a pure striker, wheras Yorke and Cole, who they so often get compared with, we're both more or less straight centre forwards. I think the Arsenal duo definitely has more talent, but I don't think you could call them more effective. Like they say, it's a funny old game.

Oh, and my Arsenal 11 would be

Seaman
Sagna Adams Campbell Cole
Vieira Fabregas
Pires Bergkamp Overmars
Henry

Again, based just on talent. If it were about combinations, Bould in for Sol Campbell and Petit in for Cesc,

And if I could take players from just before the PL started, in the individuals side McGrath in for Stam and Robbo in for Keane. By '92 captain Marvel wasn't the same player he was in his prime.
