Are we getting to big for our boots?

If Spurs win the next 3 games which is a realistic considering the opposition we would have matched last seasons total of 72points. A premier league record for us. This is with selling the best player in europe (messi, ronaldo excluded) integrating 7 new players in the team a shed load of injuries AND sacking our manager. This team could potentially gain more points than any harry team or anyone since bar last season. So why are we so disappointed? Im the same it feels like the worst season for years. Now we have people saying they hope we miss out on europe. A few years back that was our aim. Yes we want top 4 but of we finish 5th we have missed out again bit we are not that far off. I personally think next season will see great improvments. Its only our form against the top 4 that has let us down results wise.

RDBD yeah that's what I'm saying.

We've had a few games where we've scored three or four but not many.

In 9 games out of 22 games against teams not in the top seven, Chelsea have scored three or more goals. They've also scored three or more against Spurs, Arsenal and United.

Eight for Arsenal and also for Spurs.

The other difference is with this new approach you're seeing the potential for top sides to get hammered by five or six as has happened to Spurs, Arsenal and United.

"We've had a few games where we've scored three or four but not many."

Set a GD of 4 as the minimum "hammering" , and then do the tally. Spurs I think have only two such results. <Citeh> equalled that against Spurs alone.

Why? I think three is enough to suggest an attacking approach. It's just both Liverpool and City have been better at it.

It's not really a different approach, the teams are just worse.

The Whole concept of the league is to score more points than anyone else, so its entirely subjective to the oppositions points tally.

If you get a record points tally, then you have progressed on average to the other 19 teams in the league and If your league position is lower, you haven't improved as much as the teams around you. Its still a sign of progression, just not enough progression.

The cold hard fact is that a record points tally is as important as any league position (apart from 1st) because If you improved your points tally every season you would eventually win the league, even if some seasons you finished lower than others. I thnk a record points tally is what every team would want if they didnt actually win the league in any given season.

oddiy, yeah I think that's fair.

A bit like running a pb in the 100m but not winning a medal.

Darren, true mate, but points are a slightly different as they are more subjective - a 100m pb doesnt impact directly on the runners around you - If you continue to get record points you will eventually win the league the same could be said for league position - if you finish a place above each season even with less points you will eventually finish first - but it wouldnt be sustainable with a conitnually decreasing points tally.

Aye I agree.

This is why stats are so misleading and in most cases pretty pointless.

If there is a Spurs fan who is happy with the results, performances and entertainment from THFC this season then I will be stunned and I really dont care how many points we have at the end of the season.

We have been painful to watch in 90% of our games and I really dont care how many boring points we ground out under AVB and Sherwood. We have not even been exciting in any cup competition the whole season has been damned awful.
