What would a Van Gaal appointment mean

for Rooney?

With Van Gaal clearly a huge admirer of Van Persie (proof being that he handed him the dutch captaincy and they've been seen together numerous times the last month) it is quite obvious that should he be appointed, he will make Van Persie his first choice striker. I'm sure many of us would be in favour of that decision.

He is known for his preference for wingers so I imagine he'd bring in a winger or two and play a 4-2-3-1, so that leaves number 10 role for the taking. The next decision would be who to play there, Rooney or Mata.
Its a tough choice, as they are both very capable in that position, however, they are both too bigger players to not be played regularly and to be content with being second choice.

Mata came to United as he on the bench at Chelsea and needed first team football, and on his day he is one of the top number 10s in the league, so i'm not sure he'd take too well to being second choice and being benched.

However, Rooney would take even worse to being considered second choice with his notoriously huge ego, and we all know how he can throw his toys out the pram........ Van Gaal is also an old fashioned manager in the mould of Ferguson when it comes to man management: He demands respect and he won't be undermined or be held to ransom by a player, so he and Rooney could have an explosive relationship if they don't see eye to eye.

I'm not quite sure how it will/should all pan out, but I'd be interested to hear your opinions on who you think should be in Van Gaals plans and who shouldn't, and if they aren't who would they go to?

'But Rooney plays deeper and tracks back'.....

A bit less of that and we'd be more effective up top.

RVP's game doesn't rely on pace, and the reason he scores so many goals, even when he doesn't have a consistent run of games due to injuries, is because of his intelligent attacking positioning and the runs he makes. He is one of the best strikers in world football at hanging on the last defender and making the correct runs at the correct time, so I would imagine he would link up with mata/kagawa/januzaj much bettter than rooney would

Oh yeah, and another important point is that it's been shown numerous times that Rooney can play well and has developed a good understanding with Mata/Kagawa.

Is this why we are 7th in the table then?

It remains to be seen whether RVP can do likewise.

Interesting points of view. Rooney had a decent start to the season but has been average to mediocre since then.

I do not think either of them should be part of any long term plans for Utd personally.

I lost interest when i go to this bit:
"The next decision would be who to play there, Rooney or Mata.

Rooney wears No.10 but isn't one.
He doesn't find it easy to open up defences.
No very good on the ball like mata, oscar, coutinho etc.
Poor 1st touch.
And struggles in a tight space.

I will stick him on the left were he can cut in and shoot and track back he likes to do. End-of!

Rooney isn't the perfect number 10, but i believe number 10 is his best position now. He has performed well in the role - remember the 2010/11 season where we played rooney behind hernandez most of the season? Hernandez scored 21 goals in his debut season and rooney assisted 13 that season, showing he is a capable number 10.
However, I believe that mata is a superior number 10

Rooney may have had a very good season, but IMO he is far behind RVP in terms of his ability to be a striker, a goal scorer

Yeah ok

http://www.stretfordend.co.uk/goalscorers/overall.html

The season before RVP joined, Rooney hit 34 goals. The same number RVP scored in his first season

Rooney though, played at 10 when he hit his 34

Couple of season earlier, he hit 34 playing as a number 9 too

You do not climb to 3rd on United's all time list of goals scorers by the age of 28 if you are not good at scoring goals

They are both top quality in that department and hopefully the new manager plays them both together in a way that works
