Phil Dowd

Just wanted to say what a breath of fresh air it was to see Phil Dowd apply such a common-sense interpretation of the laws when allowing for an advantage before awarding the penalty and red card at the end of the first half in the Sunderland v Cardiff game.

We can only hope that this will become more prevalent in the future!

It was a penalty and a great bit of refereeing.

Pity he wasn`t reffing southampton and Everton on Saturday. Two of the clearest penalty offences on display all weekend both waived way and, to add insult to injury, Osman got booked for alleged "Simulation"
Credit to Martinez though. he never made a song and dance out of it,even though it has probably cost Everton a chance of fourth spot.

Great officiating, shame he is a crap ref.

Funny though, isn't it...

The Cardiff player makes a massive error, fouls the Sunderland player and gives away a penalty.

Cardiff fans and players - believing the referee to be incorrect - vent abuse at the referee.

Do they vent any abuse to their own player, who made the error and is the reason the situation occured?

Of course not.

Easier to just blame the referee.

Agree Winston, always been that way unfortunately.

Just the same as you would try and please judge in court

What has a court case got to do with anything?

The point is that some people go away from a game placing all of the blame at the referee's door, which is ridiculous.

Rarely does a referee have such an impact on a game that the result would have been different imo.

A referee can influence a Sunday league game or a CL Final so the importance is huge.

The analogy is fine, you'd blame a ref for giving a wrong decision and costing you 3 points, just the same as you would a judge who sentenced you for something you never did.

A referee can influence a game, sure - but far more of an influence is the team's performance.

The Cardiff player made a complete hash of it and created the situation.

Just like if your team play badly and most possession is in your own half, there's more chance a 50/50 decision will go against you in a key area.

By the way, the analogy is rubbish! If you're convicted of murder but you didn't do it, that's a tad different to putting yourself in a difficult position and having a 50/50 decision from the referee go against you.
