Good show on the radio this morning with Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters and George Cohen. They were recounting the incidents and stories surrounding the 66 World Cup...very interesting.
Geoff was on £45 a week at West Ham in 65 and when he was selected for England it went up to £90. After the World Cup it went up to £140 a week and ITV gave each player £1000 as a bonus...their FA salary for playing in the World Cup was £60 per match.
To contextualise this, in today's money, it equates to:
£45 - £730
£90 - £1460
£140 - £2275
£1000 - £16250
These fellas must look at today's wages and wonder 'what if...', but in fairness Geoff did say that he's always earned money out of his hat trick with after dinner speaking fees, etc.

Was at a St Georges day dinner with Geoff and bought a photo of his goal at the auction he signed it and I got it dedicated to my nephew who was well pleased with it. I think he does alright these days...
