The Telegraph open the floodgates - Benzema

The Telegraph are running with the "Arsenal prepare bid for Benzema" line this morning.

In terms of style of play, Benzema might just fit Arsenal like a glove. But there's so many variables to a deal being struck.

Real Madrid would certainly DEMAND a hefty fee for Benzema. The initial report is of £30 million being a figure required to get the Spaniards attention, Madrid may well want more than that for the striker. They've got a lot of previous in 'moving the goal posts when it comes to transfer fees. Just look at the situation last summer where Arsenal thought they had provisionally a agreed a fee for Higuain. Only for Madrid to sudeenly up the price by more than £10 million. In retrospect this was by proxy of Napoli being multiple million Euros the richer after selling Cavani to PSG. With that excess cash burning a hole in the Italians pockets, there was only one outcome, Higuain went to Naples.

I don't think Real Madrd would entertain letting Benzema leave unless another top quality forward was to come to the Bernabéu this summer.

At the risk of causing a meltdown to our Liverpudlian cousins we move onto the 'Suarez to Real Madrid' rumour. That will revolve around the release-fee on his latest contract.

Reports in Spain say Real Madrid are willing to pay between £70/80 million for Suarez! I smell a saga. Suarez part-2? Burn the shirts? Watch this space.

As I understand it the Frenchman (Benzema) has 1 year left on his deal and it remains to be seen if Madrid will look to cash in over the summer and break the bank for Suarez or a similar level player. Or stick with what they've got and offer him a new deal.

I'd take him at Arsenal, with open arms, legs and any other orifices or limbs!

30M's too much for a player who'll be free to negotiate in 6 months' time imo. If the player has any sense, he'll force his hand to get the club to accept a lower bid or hold out until Jan. The savings for the new club generally translate into higher wages for the player.

And on that issue, Benzema's currently on roughly 145,000 quid a week. I'd imagine that he'd be looking for a healthy increase on that.

Advantage for Arsenal then? If we are serious about our progress, the leadership must bite the bullet and spend.

Hi march.

On PSG, I think it's worth bearing in mind that Ibra's 32 now. He's at that stage in his career where he might start to decline rapidly at any moment, so I wouldn't be in the least surprised if PSG go shopping, especially not if Cavani pushes for a move.

March, on your other comment, I'd say it's advantage the player, but not necessarily Arsenal. The transfer fee isn't the problem imo, but the big wages he's more than likely to demand.

On that subject, who's your highest earner right now?

I see your point. My reasoning is that the player forcing his hand makes it easier for Arsenal to negotiate the transfer fee.

Wages is entirely another matter though. I've read on this forum that currently it's Ozil, on 140 k/wk. But since we're talking about Arsenal, it wouldn't be the first transfer we screw up due to fees or wages, would it?

Hope we get him though, seems we are going after Vela again. Together with Walcott I suppose they could contributrle goals from wide areas, with Ramsey chipping in as well.

Yes, it's going to be much easier for any club to negotiate a fee. Thing is I imagine Benzema might be wanting a fair bit more than his current 145k - either that or a juicy signing on fee.

This goes without saying. Let's see how this pans out. What are the indications about Madrid actually goingfafter Suarez?
The thing with Benz is, I see him as the most realistic option for Arsenal in their quest for a high profile CF, with other hardly being available (Cavani too expensive, Costa going to Chelsea and the chance for us to go after Higuain being minimal because of the significant investment made by Napoli to sign him) or hardly good enough (don't rate Mandzukic that high, or Bony or Benteke for that matter).

Sorry March been out all afternoon.

Most of what I've seen published so far here about RM/Suarez has basically just been reporting what the UK media's been saying.
