IGNs 100 games of the generation (top 20)

20. Super Mario Galaxy 2
19. Wii Sports
18. Mass Effect
17. BioShock
16. Batman: Arkham City
15. Half Life 2:Episode 2
14. Assassin's Creed 2
13. Rock Band
12. Mass Effect 2
11. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
10. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
9. Journey
8. Grand Theft Auto 5
7. Red Dead Redemption
6. Minecraft
5. Fallout 3
4. The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim
3. The Last of Us
2. Portal 2
1. Super Mario Galaxy

Agree/disagree?

I haven't played Super Mario Galaxy but it seems like a bit of an attempt to appease Nintendo fans due to the lack of other Nintendo games. Or is it actually that good?

It's a pretty solid list bar 1 or 2 odd entries. My #1 would be any of GTA5, Skyrim, Red Dead or TLOU personally.

(It is a click to view next slide deal unfortunately).

Last of Us was pretty cack up to a point, and even then it didn't do enough to make up the slow start and become one of the best games of this generation.

Depends on people's preferences, it's essentially open-world vs. linear games.

I must say, I don't have the patience for open-world games, the only one I've ever really completed was GTA Vice City. They are fantastic though.

Last of Us deserves it's place imo, great story, great character building, I'll probably buy the PS4 just for the remastered version (and FIFA )

Games CAN be slow though, they don't all have to be explosive and fast paced to be good. I really enjoyed TLOU from start to finish, it's an action horror, it's meant to have rises and dips in tension and pace. The character building was brilliant and it's one of very few games where I've been fully gripped on the story. If I had to be critical of something it would only be about the gameplay and AI, but even that [gameplay] was good too despite what some people say.

Regarding the list, if it wasn't for the technical issues my #1 would easily be Skyrim, but it was a mess on the PS3 just after release and even now it still becomes very choppy once you pumped 100+ hours into it. I do enjoy good long winded games that get you loads of hours without getting boring. I think of the PS3/360 gen only Skyrim (multiple playthroughs) and GTA5 (because of online) are the only ones that have given me several hundred hours each.

Super Mario Galaxy was an amazing game, whether it's worthy of #1 I'm not too sure, the controls are brilliantly mapped and the level designs are unbelievable. Just a shame the Wii was a dog of a console.

My Top 5
1, Skyrim
2, Fallout 3
3, Super Mario Galaxy
4, Portal 2
5, Mass Effect

I understand that, and that is the main reason why I watch South Korean films, I like the slow build up of characters, and getting the foundations of the plot engraved in peoples head before the explosive ending, which seems to then impact you more as the slow start has immersed you deep into the movies world and plot.

However TLOU I believe tried to do that, and didn't do it very well. That combined with an extremely linear gameplay, I thought wasn't the best and certainly would not say top 5. I admit I do love my open world games (GTA:SA especially) but I also like games like Uncharted, which I believe deserves a spot in the top 5.

My top 5:

1. Red Dead Redemption
2. Fallout: New Vegas
3. Mass Effect 2
4. Resident Evil 5
5. Call of Duty: World At War

It's all totally subjective, but I spent hours on these games and loved every second of it

Mine :

1. The Last of Us
2. GTA IV
3. Oblivion : Elder Scrolls
4. COD4
5. FIFA 14

Difficult to order those top 3, but can honestly say will never forget my TLOU experience.

How on earth did Portal 2 hit 2 and SMG hit 1? Cannot comprehend that.

Gonna have to revisit Fallout: New Vegas when I have the time. I didn't get far in Fallout 3 either, but I barely scratched the surface in New Vegas. I think I just prefer the settings in TES games, they're less hostile which makes the game even more immersive.

Chris, interesting that you've picked GTA IV and Oblivion over newer incarnations. I loved all four, although I did play Oblivion on PC. I'd still pick GTA V as the online experience and sheer scale are more impressive and Skyrim as I thankfully escaped the glitches and the world was sharper.

Also I've not got the latest one but I'd really struggle to put a FIFA game up there. My favourite on this gen was probably FIFA 12 as it had the best balance between on and offline modes while everything still vaguely worked. Some good online moments on 11 but career was broken, 10 was quite fun, 09 probably wouldn't stand the test of time. 13 can go to hell, they really should've kicked on from the position they were in but they broke everything.

Oops, meant GTA V

Was going to say GTAIV was disappointing for me, the only thing I really liked was Niko. The world was dreary and bland (NY has been done to death in games/TV), the missions were repetitive and the characters were dull. It was going backwards from GTASA imo. GTA5 was a big step back into the right direction & had everything that makes the GTA series so great.

Loved Super Mario 64 and Sunshine, but could never get into Galaxy.

Think it was the Wii controls I hated.
