Rooney, why, oh why do we persist with him?

Why do we insist on playing Rooney?

He has not had a good national tournament since 2004, and he is showing no evidence even on the pitch for his own team to show that this year will be any different. He gets paid an extortionate amount of money and cannot even be bothered to show any passion for his own club team. His passion for England has always been questionable and it seems as though he would rather be at home then playing for England. Even now he has booked a holiday for just after the group stages as he thinks we will go out.

He doesn't want to be there, so can someone tell me why we continuously play a player who has no interest in being at the tournament or playing for his country?

Also he has never even scored in a world cup and his form recently shows the likelihood of him scoring a goal, is in his own net!

Costa Rica have won. That is good for us as long as we make it count tonight!

Didn't want to be proved right, but bar Rooney's cross, he did nothing last night.

Missed a clear cut chance as well!

His cross was the only world class bit of play from us all night. Hard to argue that he wasn't great, but one of the main points a lot of us made above is that Rooney is class when played in position. He's not a winger. You weren't proved right.

How can you discount some of the play from Welbeck and Sterling? They both played very well. Rooney's cross was great but I wouldn't say it was the only bit of world class play?! Rooney was to much use playing deep. It's been proved before that tracking back isn't his strength. Would Milner have made more sense?

I didn't mean anything negative about the other players. To be fair, Sterling's pass for the goal was also amazing. Wellbeck did some decent stuff, but also chickened out of a few chances to run at them. Personally, I'd play Sterling out wide and Rooney central.

I thought Sterling played well last night and should keep his place, also Welbeck to be fair to him did well and I have been critical of him. Lallana for Rooney for me.

Rooney is still our best player. It's ludicrous that we play him out of position. Every other team plays their best player in the position that player wants to play.
