Binding performance last night
He showed why he's been getting rave reviews with two assists and a solid defensive showing.. just what we need on the left.
What say you?

He doesn't play left back anymore. He was there yesterday but FDB converted him to a holding mid and was ajaxs player of the year

He sounds like an internet blog to me!!
He was certainly getting rave reviews last night but it would be easy to get carried away. Playing Spain, with their open (usually) quality football, which was show up a bit last night, is not the same as playing in the premiership.
In our league, from about position 8 down it is all about breaking down defensive minded teams. I would like to be convinced that he could do a job in those circumstances, rather than get carried away on the strength of one good performance in the WC, where, let's face it, Spain were poor on the night or possibly at the end of an era.

Essou Ekotto was decent too wouldn't you say

I thought he still looked the business, and certainly better than anything we had at WHL last season and was just thinking how sad it was that some berk(s) let him go out on loan, or didn't bring him back, when, whatever his faults, he was certainly a better option than what we had available to us.

World Cup is not the best place to evaluate players. It's a fact that players give more effort in 3 games than most would over a 38-50 game season.
All players know that they may only have 3 games to shine. So effort is considerably higher than their league performance.
It would be silly to sign a player based on World Cup performances. After all what do we pay scouts for if it only requires us to wait every two years for a tournament then sign a performing player.

As Ramboue said, he was Ajax's player of the year - I'm not judging this solely on a couple of good crosses.
He's been playing as a deep centre mid as Ajax kept losing creative players, not because he can't defend. I think he'd be a great signing, one of the reasons I wanted de Boer as manager.

We all want a new LB but how do we know that Pochetinno will be happy with Bae, Rose and Fryers? He could well be. Two or three seasons ago Bae was probably the 3rd or 4th best lb in the premier league and we all know when his heart is in it can be a class act.
Regarding Rose and Fryers they both have all the raw ingredients ie pace strength etc and could be taught to be better defenders.

Rose did very well at Sunderland but he was never in the top 3 or 4.. Evra, Kolarov, Clichy, Cole.. he's good going forwards but a headless chicken.. maybe MoPo can tame him
I like Fryers but he's young to be chucked in and has played CB as much as LB. Agree the potential is there, I guess it comes down to where the money goes.. apparently defenders are on his list so you never know.

My bad, you were talking about Benny.. he's got it in his locker to be a decent ball playing LB but his concentration is awful.. Blind for me

Fair enough, I would have preferred De Boer also but hey its Poch. so I'm he will get my support. I actually think the only position in the starting line up that needs serious attention is Left back. I would rather we spanked 16-20m on a left back than any other position.
