My mistake...

India, why are they only 5th in their national game?

Australia with just 22M population are No.1

Just goes to show the quantity doesnt = quality

To an extent I can accept being beaten by a country with a much smaller population than us if they have a genuine football pedigree as Uruguay do.

Australia are awful in soccer, they have consistently been knocked out of WC and they are good in that Aussie rule thing.

Using population stats to determine how good a country should be at football is plain stupid

on that basis, China, India, Indonesia and Pakistan should all have brilliant football teams

But we know for a fact we take football more seriously than those countries, so population should be used against England to show how overwhelmingly poor we really are.

They're a lot better at cricket than football. I don't watch a lot of cricket but I'm guessing they might be better than us at it given our recent results. Probably give us a run for our money in the football too.

Not likely on either front, Bangladesh remain undoubtedly the worst side playing test cricket (however low the West Indies try to fall).

I guess Bangladesh are the England of Asia then - p!ss poor at their number one sport. Oh well we're not alone then, that's comforting.

I wouldn't say shocked. More annoyed. Uruguay were always a good team and we knew it was a tough group. I guess people expected a bit more from England after the Italy performance but they went backwards.

Sad thing about England is that they have the population, money and passion for the game yet.....

Belgium, Netherlands, Portugal, Uruguay manage to produce world class talent and get far in tournaments

Isnt the population of England about 48m and the UK 70m, which includes Scotland, Wales and NI?

So its a country of 48m whooped by a country of 6m
