Tactically and technically England have been poor.

When Hodgson got the job Liverpool fans new what to expect. A lack of tactical flexibility with a deep defensive line and an over reliance on a direct style of play.

Hodgson never was and never will be the man to take England forward. The limited technical ability of the players doesn't help, but he isn't the man to find a the solutions. He is a cautious manager. So when the game requires his teams to break down a defence, they struggle.

What will the FA do? Probably fek all. Hodgson has completed one of his goals. Reducing expectations to a more realistic level.

Didn't Gerrard say that we'd beat Uruguay and Costa Rica based on the Italy performance? What a pr!ck....worst captain ever!

Furthermore - no forward thinking positive subs either. Ok Rooney got a couple of goals and an assist but other than that he was totally anonymous!

The players needed more desire and Hodgson just needed to be better.

There is an obvious over reliance on the importance of the England captain in this country. The captain becomes undropable which is ridiculous.

So would have you picked as captain.

Terry - Retired from international football following his racism. Was also stripped of the captaincy after shafting his team mates bird.

Rooney - Sent off in disgrace at a previous WC finals tournament. 1 goal (finally!) in 10 WC final games

Lampard - Old and slow after a fairly miserable season. 0 goals in 9 WC finals games

Hart - Lost count of the the amount of goals he has conceded in WC final tournaments.

The real culprits are the press who constantly erode the players' confidence and snoop into their private lives and spout their unqualified (in most cases) opinions across the nation everyday. With these on the players' backs, it's no wonder we played with fear last night - the fear of failure and of being exposed in national newspapers at a spit roast snorting something with grannies.
