Great Football Players

Morning chaps, what lovely weather we are having at the moment. The bronze god is back! . Enjoying the world cup immensely and a few surprises (Australia/USA/Iran, Spain ). Long may it continue!

Back to the subject at hand; was at my local this weekend and we had a debate about great and good football players, the differences between them, the criteria for assessing what makes them ‘great’, and what unique characteristics elevate them to higher levels than their peers. I know it is a deep conversation to get into when downing a few pints but alcohol helps the brain be more creative in my experience at least.

The obvious requirement of course is skill and talent (natural ability) but at the same time we can point to numerous talented players who did not make it with unbelievable talent. We also have players who are dedicated to their craft and spend hours on the training ground to hone this to perfection. We have those who are fortunate to have the DNA passed down from their parents; we also have those who are committed to the game but do not have the natural ability but have great careers.

We did agree however, that it takes all of those traits to make it, but one which I believe is the most important is the driven self-belief to be the greatest and that is what separates the good from the great. You generally find this in players who come from very humble beginnings or players who have been told you will not make it and it makes them prove the doubters wrong. It is something we notice in our lives as well and I am sure a lot of posters can relate to a challenge thrown your way and your response to it.

So guys a few questions;
1) What do you think are the key traits football players have that make them great?
2) How do you define greatness on a football pitch?
3) Apart from Ronaldo and Messi, who do you consider greats in the world of football today?
4) Is it just me or do we not have as many great football players these days?
5) Finally, do you miss those friendlies that pitted the Europe v Best of the world, etc.? I miss them as they were good games.

Your thoughts please

That guy has a severe hate of Liverpool. I have no idea where it comes from as they've never been our rivals. Should see the crackers he comes out with when somebody on his board dare say something positive about Liverpool or one of it's players.

Bale can play in any position on the field to a very good standard, Sewerez dives a lot.

If you were to llo up the diving stats for diving, Bale would be very high up there in the prem.

Bale has one trick, something he has mastered well but Suarez has it all and cannot be neutralised by a pacy fullback the way Bale is so easily neutralsied

He couldn't play left back very well, the position that was supposed to be his natural one and even was nearly sold before he was moved further forward.
