Joel 'JC' Campbell

Morning guys,

A lot of discussion I saw, both last night and in general, has been around the subject of our latest Campbell, part of the flavour of the week side in Costa Rica. Indication is that Wenger has been impressed by Joel, but on the basis of his recent comments, that doesn't seem like that's enough for any guarantees of a place in next season's team. The suggestion from some has been that we cash in on Joel whilst his stock is high.

Personally, I do not see the efficacy in selling. Whilst I am a fan of our managers (something I guess a lot of others on here cannot say), it cannot be said that when we sell players and make a decent financial return, that this is invested back into other transfers. This is not me suggesting we won't sign any players, far from it in fact. More that if we spend £50 million plus on at three players or so, it will be not be affected by returns made on 'expendable' players like Cambell, Vela, Miquel or the like. Any money that the manager spends will be spent because of prior planning, and any money received on players like this will be a mere bonus.

In this case, I do not think that selling Joel would be productive, because we do not have an abundance of like for like players. The nearest player to Campbell in our squad, in terms of pure face value, is Podolski; a player who represents an enigma in our squad. These sorts of direct players either seem to no fit into our style of play, or seem to completely freshen up our attack- a double-edged sword if you will. From my point of view, we could do with an additional wide forward, particularly one who could play on both wings (potentially).

So selling Campbell would mean losing a player in an area of the pitch in which we lack when Theo is not around, and not to have the money reinvested into the playing staff. If we sold Podolski, an important squad member, I believe Wenger would reinvest the money in the form of a replacement. Yet Campbell has not featured yet, therefore his absence would go unnoticed (theoretically at least). If we sign a Griezmann, Draxler etc, then of course my view may change on Campbell's future. Yet selling hm just does not seem beneficial at this moment in time.

Campbell should've at least gone on loan in the UK, big big mistake !

Didn't say Gnabs is more accomplished, but more potential for sure. JC is decent, and I'd like to see him in the squad next season, but if we sign Sanchez (for example), we have Sanchez, Ox, Walcott, Campbell, Gnabry, Cazorla and Podolski all competing for two positions - probably too many!

Talent/potential - Gnabry shades it i think

Campbell's streets ahead mentally though by the looks of it.

With the name JC shouldn't he be in goal?

You'll get it in a min 👍

Gnabry is 18. Joel Campbell is 22. I would say Joel Campbell is ideal as backup Theo on the wing.

Gnabry can go out on loan and we can reassess when he gets to 22.

He was, fairly infamously I thought, on loan in Europe because he couldn't get a work permit for the UK.

That's the last place he'd want to be, he'll be doing anything he can to avoid all those crosses.

Think a season with Everton would be the makings of him.
