Add this to going to a new club, man utd being that club. A huge club, for a big fee. With a dumbass manager who then got sacked. What kind of impact did any utd players have? Would be unfair to judge mata on that situation.

Mata played alright for us. Was better for us than for Chelsea last season.

He and Rooney aren't alike. Rooney also spends far more time in his own half than Mata so they didn't really take up all the same positions.

I don't see how it can't work with the right system and players. LVG is an attacking manager, Moyes is not, it'll suit Mata better.

Having Herrera in the side should help him as well. Mata doesn't beat his man with pace. So when he's passing infield to Fellaini to make a one two it's not gonna work.

Him and Herrera played well together from what I saw at the under 21's a few years ago when Spain won it and both were named in the team of the tournament.

Not much to go off, I know, but their games looked like they complimented each other quite well.

I think Mata will have a good season next year whether he's in the middle or out wide.

Look at Germany Darren, no outstandingly quick players but in the right system can break ever so quick and efficiently. All depends on system. Germany were breathtaking tonight like they were against England and argies at the last tourney

Would take a while for us to get to that level, however, and the problem we have is Rooney because he breaks down so many of our attacks with sloppy passing and rapey touches.

I'm hoping some better coaching can improve this because it's something that really shouldn't have crept into his game.

It's facking frustrating. He'll pull off a pass that even Mata would be proud of one minute and then the next he'll make a pass or a touch that even Carroll would laugh at.

Ok Nick lets judge Mata after a full season at Utd then.

I still don't think he'll have the huge impact that you and Darren are insinuating.

Not to say I don't rate Mata, I've always rated Mata even when he was at Valencia but I just don't think he's quite on the level that some fans seem to think he is.

I've said he'll have a good season. I cannot predict just how good because I don't know how we'll set up.

But it doesn't detract from the fact that for two years he was certainly one of the best attacking midfielders around. And for me, the best attacking midfielder in the league.

If he can rediscover that form at United we should have a good season. Especially as he won't be setting up Torres.

Darren and I wish him all the best as he's one of the nicest footballers you'll ever meet.
