According to Daily Fail we're in for this 20 year old defender from Sporting Lisbon? Cheltenham born but raised in Portugal, 15 appearances for 1st team last season and an England under 21 apparently? Personally, I've never heard of him and if any credence to this story, does anyone know anything about the lad?

"Glad to know we're so highly praised"
I was a Nextgen watcher, and over those 2 seasons your kids were demolishing their opponents.
The game against Spurs showed just how good
your academy are at drilling the basic competencies into the players.

Yeah, it was a great team. Unfortunately our main team was such carp then we had to promote several players from the NextGen squad and fumbled the competition in the end.
Dier is quality, but the team improved leaps and bounds last year and he lost some breathing space, that and the mighty pound could allure him out. I'll be very sorry if that happens, we're in the CL next year and with a busier schedule he would have chances to shine and show his stuff.
And Ricardo Rocha , what a lumber merchant that guy was. One of those cases of a career with good clubs nobody knows why. A million miles away from Dier, that's for sure.

I spoke to a Sporting supporter at the Spurs game, and he said similar (your senior squad had a lot of injuries etc so your best academy players at the Nextgen age had all been called up) .

Is that the first time in a few years ?? Good luck with that.

Thanks mate
First time since 08/09, we really hit the skids in the last few years: terrible presidents, always changing managers, wasting young talents whilst buying expensive carp, selling on the cheap to funds. But things are now starting to pick up

Do you lose a lot of your academy talent to the likes of Porto, or the top La Liga sides ??
That can be a difficult vicious circle to break free from (Southampton this summer demonstrating that for the PL) .

The big issue was when Moutinho wanted to leave when he wasn't selected to WC 2010 squad (a very dodgy decision) and then forced his exit to Porto. The sale of your team captain to one of your main rivals is unheard of in Portugal.
A couple of promising youngsters went to Barça reserves and flopped badly, but to La Liga sides there hasn't been much activity, to be honest.
Last year Ilori and Bruma were sold, but we managed to grab some cash for them. the Bruma situation was an Eastenders-type never-ending story.
The main challenge is to show to these youngsters that you benefit more in flourishing first here and only after achieving football success you should leave (we're 4th in the UEFA rankings, that's and epic achievement for a country of our size), and not follow the easy money too early.

True.
Problem is that stuff like the PL silly transfer/wage money can make it difficult for most clubs and players to resist.

Country Life :
There have been claims today that Dier has signed for Spurs for 5m Euros.
Any news at the Lisbon end ??
