From Zenit, born 12 January 1989 and capped 50 times for Belgium, as a long term response to defensive midfield problem. He’s contracted until 2017 and could cost around 30 mil. An eye-catching defensive midfielder who can play attacking positions as he is quick and good on the ball without lacking physical attributes. I’d like to read your thoughts fellow Reds.

it would mean gerrard getting dropped, which wont happen

He could offer among else a Mascherano type cover for defence due to his quick feet and some surging runs at counter attack that Lucas or Gerrard can't carry out, for different reasons though.

We need a striker and LB, so why spend £30m on a midfielder?

He 's highly adaptive player and can play further attacking role in midfield or further defending at fullback positions if needed.

No doubt about striker and LB. I just suggest we need a defensive midfielder as well.

We have tons of midfielder already. If he isn't that much better than what we already have, then it's not worth it.

I honestly don't think we need another striker yet. Sterling has all the attributes to take over from Suarez. Not as good as Suarez now, but he will be. I would give him a run at it and then look in Jan if it doesn't work out. Plus Origi will be here next season anyway.
Borini is irrelevant as he wasn't at the club last season and Ibe looks like he could be like sterling last season out wide and as a number 10.
However, if someone like Benzema was available and interested in signing, you can't say no.
A left back should be top priority this window. If Clyne continues his form for Southampton this season, get him in to replace Johnson and compete with Flanagan.
Anyone know what's going on with Will Hughes? I thought he would be a dead cert for this summer with a loan back to Derby. Constantly linked all last season, yet nothing this summer...

I can only assume we enquired about Hughes and didn't like the prices quoted so are waiting for him to develop a bit more and wind his contract down a bit before committing to anything.
To be honest he is better where he is at the moment. He is still only 19 years old and regular football will be better for his career and development than being a bit part player with us.

We already signed a player in his position, I don't see why we'd now abandon that plan and sign another. We have other positions which need filling whilst we're sorted in midfield. Would be a very strange move, similar to Spurs last season when they bought too many players in the one area and neglected the positions they actually needed to improve in.
