Arsenal Wanted Smalling for Vermaelen

Here's our full story on Manchester United's decision not to pursue their interest in Thomas Vermaelen. Barcelona now look to be the leading contenders to prise the Belgium centre-back away from Arsenal, who are reported to have wanted Chris Smalling in exchange if they were going to do any sort of deal with United.

No wonder why we turned it down we only have 3 Recognised CB's if we gave them Smalling we would still need another CB

Feck that, Smalling has so much potential I really don't understand those who don't rate him.

The best reader of the game we have had since we signed Rio.

If TV goes to Barca for £15m does that mean Arsenal rated Smalling at that price?

It means that we got as much as we could for Vermaelen. Doesn't say much about Smalling. I can't believe Barcelona want him, personally.

I think it's more Arsenal effectively asking for something that they clearly knew wasn't a realistic option as they didn't want Vermaelen to go to you.

He won't have to do much defending there, then I don't think he is the best on the ball?

They will love him 40 yards shots

He doesn't even do those anymore . There is a decent defender in there under the poor form, but not much more.

This really makes me wonder why we are selling him?
Manchester United, Barcelona, presumably want him for first team?
Hmmm… I like Vermaelen, hope he stays and regains his fire.

Exactly, this way they can save face and not annoy us. They have forgotten that we remain thankful for RvP and for taking Silvestre of our hands

Arsenal have played the two clubs well and extracted a Levyesque style transfer fee ironically !
