As a sort of follow-on from the "Top 5 Video Games" article, what are the games you hate that everybody else seems to love? Sometimes a game gets hyped up by everybody around you, but you just can't seem to see what all the fuss is about. You see massive flaws that everyone else appears to be blind to and their positives are your negatives.
For me, it's Red Dead Redemption. I'd put off buying this game for so long as I'd been suckered by the GTA IV hype and had been bitterly disappointed with the path Rockstar was going. I was assured by several sources that this game was far better than GTA IV and I should give it a chance, so I did.
What did I get for my faith? An unfinished glitchy mess of a game with an incredibly dull setting, horrible characters and some of the most boring game mechanics I've ever encountered.
I lost count of the number of times a glitch caused me to fail a mission, whether it be my horse wandering off or just the physics engine deciding to implode.
The characters are just awful. Marston is such an unlikeable hypocrite, the woman is just dull, the villain is generic bad guy #263. The only one I liked was the snake oil salesmen. He was at least fun.
The game mechanics are the worst though. Almost every situation can be solved by using Dead Eye, which becomes incredibly tedious. The horse taming & cow herding minigames are torturous. And as for constantly tapping X to keep the horse galloping, how did that ever get into the final game?
The only redeeming feature was the hunting. Game of the year? Hah!
1/10, and that's being generous. If you like this game, you're wrong.
I've still not purchased GTA V because of this game, as I suspect it'll just be more of the same.
Games You Hate That Everybody Loves

"Gonna have to disagree(crazy huh?). RDR is a masterpiece IMO"
The thing is, it feels and looks like it should be great, hence why I gave it a second try about a year after buying it for the first time. I think I persevered with it for around 3 hours before giving up.
It felt like go here....cut scene...go here....cut scene...go here...2 minutes of action....go here....perform boring repetitive task.....go here.
@Simon West
Ah I don't mind that kind of stuff man, but it needs to either be at least a little bit fun or have some kind of point surely?

Fair play Chris - like i said to RtM earlier its horses for courses, i have barely touched any in the final fantasy series and have only maybe played 2 zelda games through to completion, and you know what i have never felt the need to really play either series

Simon - thoughts on D:OS?
Chris - the cut scenes drop dramatically after that. You probably pulled exactly what I did with TLOU

Loving it my friend, this is more or less the spiritual sequel to baldurs gate/planescape torment. Some great writing, nice old skool d&d, all wrapped up in a great looking game, only problem is you really need at least 2 hours to sit down and play it! Think I have sunk over 10 hours not even completed the 1st chapter and only level 3! Loving the menu with the promise of dlc/mods and the dev tools out soon.

Call of duty games
I purchased a couple and yes they are good but they're not out of this world!
Gears of war
I finally bought this after years of rave reviews and I felt the difficulty to be quite tough, even on easy (I know.. but Im not very good at these types of games) but it looked alright i suppose!
