excited when the player taking their place gets injured or banned?
I've always wondered this, but footballers want to play at all times, and although they claim to want what's best for the club, you can't tell me someone like Khedira didn't jump for joy when Alonso got his second yellow against Bayern Munich. It's just be a natural reaction.
Yet at the same time, they want the best for the team so part of them must be upset in that regard. Especially if the player they were replacing was a Ronaldo or Messi.
It's just weird to imagine someone like Fabianski or Lindegaard getting all excited at the misfortune of their teammate, just because it means they actually get to play
Do you think bench players are secretly

I know it's a different level but when I played Saturday league football I wanted the team to lose if I was on the bench.
If they kept winning, I wasn't going to get back into the team, if we get hammered 7-0 and both centre backs had a nightmare, I knew i'd be back in the team.
I think at professional level the players have signed contracts, get paid handsomely and in some cases re-located themselves and their families to play for a club.
They probably want the team to win, but also want the chance to prove that they can add something extra to the team.

I could just easily see Torres walking in his house with a bottle of champagne after training one evening, and excitedly proclaiming to his wife "Diego pulled him hamstring!"

Only Rooney actually wants to play football. Every other player in the world is just there for the money and fake injury so that they can get subbed and get easy money. Rooney loves playing the game and would play for free if he could. Who else here can honestly say they would play football for free at the best team in the world every week? Not one of you. Hero is thrown around all too readily these days, but Rooney is a dying breed.

Of course they are happy. I remember Danny Mills saying he was secretly very happy that Gary Neville was injured for the 2002 WC.
Unless you are the back up to the star player I think most players are wanting to start, unless they know they are lucky to be there.

Same in all sports. I wonder if Matt Prior secretly hopes Jos Buttler drops a few behind the stumps.
