UEFA Coefficient

As expected, it looks like we're in Pot 2 for the CL.

Looking at the UEFA website

I also notice that Utd (and other English teams not in Europe this season) have 0.357 pts for this season. I always assumed you'd get a zero coefficient if you didn't take part but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Can anyone shed any light on why non-participants get any score at all?

Ivan, absolutely agree mate

Hafi,
well done for that piece of history but next season will be interesting for you. Assuming Utd get into the CL group stage (either automatically by coming 1-3 in PL or qualifying rounds from 4th place PL finish) then your coefficient will drop by 32.314 down to 68.407 which will see you in Seeding Pot 3 at best and possibly Pot 4 depending on how those teams around that coefficient number get on this season.
That's due to your best year (10-11) dropping off the rankings for next season. So you'll have swapped your best year (in the last 5) for your worst dropping your coefficient about as much as it's possible to drop in a single season.
It'll be fun seeing how you get out of a group with at least 2 other top sides rather the 1 (or 0) top sides you're used to at the group stage.
If you fail to get a CL place at the end of this season then another year outside of the CL will cement your Pot 4 status the following year

It is exactly as Ivan says, a way of keeping the clubs that Sky etc will pay to show in the competition as long as possible to keep revenues high. Very unjust, and even more so when you consider a team breaking into the European spots but qualifying by right probably won't be seeded but a team that always qualifies via the qualifying rounds having finished lower in the league, will be in a high pot, thus making it easier to get out of the group and get more points for next year.

Ivan,
blimey that's really depressing...because it's so true!
Frankly, I hadn't thought of it like that before. It's clear that the current system disadvantages all but the established elite cubs but I've been blinkered to thinking that was the totality of the problem. Me just being glad that City just got in under the wire before the monstrously inequitable FFP rules took hold.I hadn't considered the effect on a whole country's football expectations.
The effect is the same whether it's a club or country, if you've not already got your snout in the trough, forget it.

It is the real issue with FFP, all those moaning about 'spending what they earn' really refer to spending what they get from the Champions League TV contracts. That is the real distortion and means life for clubs like West Brom, Aston Villa, Newcastle is a focus on trying to get into the Europa spots as an absolute ceiling on ambition as those already with their noses in the trough get so much it is almost impossible to get higher now rich wner spending is curtailed. For those clubs , and those from UEFA's lesser leagues, they are expected to be grateful for whatever crumbs fall out of the trough when others have had their fill.
The Champions League is so heavily weighted in favour of a few clubs from the big 4 leagues that the chances of a (say) Polish club springing a surprise are so small as to be not worth considering. It is a commercial cartel run for the benefit of Sky etc and their favourite clubs and should itself be subject to a 'Fair Play' investigation. Seeding clubs who come 4th in their own league so they will almost certainly qualify (and thus get more money) at the expense of national Champions who happen to have a low co-efficient isn't Fair Play, Financial or otherwise.
