I was just reading through a thread on the united board and so many of them are saying that LVG should be sacked should he fail to get top 4 this season
The more I see and read about united since the start of last season the more it is reminding me of us in 1990.
I honestly think if they fail to get CL football this season and then subsequently sack LVG they won't be back in the CL for five or more seasons. They will do exactly what we did (but probably go through more managers then we did, it's 2 in 12 months at the moment, 3 if you want to include Giggs' few games) They are going to start throwing money at the problem but a continued managerial merry-go-round will just leave inflated, unbalanced squads that each new manager will not get the time to sort out.
Like we found when Rodgers came in we all had to severely lower our expectations, be patient and allow the man to do his job, united must do this, they have to stick with LVG if they see him has the right man, if they don't they're in serious trouble and will experience what we have for the past 2 decades, some trophies along the way most likely but never a dominant period like they're used to.
Anyone else seeing these similarities? Just like we felt that we were only ever a year off being right back at the top but we didn’t have a good, balanced and settled squad for years due to too many experienced players leaving at the same time under Souness and not replacing these players with similar quality.
Seem familiar

If they back him both from the stands and I. Transfers they should do alright...next seaon.
But he's 63 old and I'm not sure what direction the board is going, they seem to have lost their values in terms of players and trying to buy stars, they would better off bringing through some youth and get that LNG a young manager!
Their problem is the fans even before thus seaon were saying his they would challenge and blow teams away?
Will their fans give any manager enough time to succeed!

Yup. The invincible aura that surrounded the club is gone and poor planning and foresight from management who just assumed that they'll always be elite, has left the club in a horrible position.
They can't have a good transition because the fans are all glory hunters who demand instant success and won't tolerate a manager who takes a few seasons to get going. They will end up sacking manager after manager looking for a quick fix but can't offer unlimited wages like City/Chelsea so the team will be constantly stuck.
Same thing happened to Liverpool and they haven't gotten back on their perch for 24 years.
All stems from poor planning when they were on top. With City and Chelsea it gets more and more difficult to compete as time passes

They're too rich and powerful to be poor for much longer.

Fergie winning the PL in his last season pervertedly made it harder for them.
It gave the illusion of a squad of winners that only needed tweaking here and there to maintain success.
Turns out theres quite a lot to do to get back to being competitive at the top again.
I don't think they'll be in the wilderness too long, too much money and prestige for that. However, we may never see domination al la Liverpool / Utd again.

I think you will find quite a lot of us cheered Moyes until the very end at the ground. Yes there were the odd fans who didn't such as the plane mob, however we cheered him and have him a lot more support than most premier league fans would have.

Rodgers has a philosophy that took time to be implemented, but we saw the results towards the end of his first season and last year it was built upon.
Moyes had no plan for Utd and although Van Gaal will, sacking him at the end of the season if they fail to reach the CL will be an even bigger step backwards.

Just look at how much they spent on Fellaini and Mata, over 60 million and has it improved them at all?
My point is that even throwing money at the issue may not resolve the problems, 2 huge transfer fees with very little impact, another similarity to us.
There is very little point in spending huge sums of money if you're going to sack every manager after 1 season if they dont qualify for the CL, spend big and give the manager time and they shoudl get back as they are a huge club and generate a ridiculous amount of cash.

Give Brendan his due, it took him about 4-5 months and the blueprint started to take effect.
In season 2, we were like a freight train and probably should have won the league - but for a slip

Evans.............5 years
Houllier...........6 years
