With the impending arrival of Di Maria, there is no way we can continue to play 3-5-2. It doesn't even work with the players we currently have either.
4-3-3, which is said to be Van Gaal's favoured formation, would be very good for us I feel, if we do sign another CM this week.
Front 6 of
--------New CM--------Herrera
--------------------Mata------------
Di Maria-----------------Januzaj/Rooney
----------------RVP/Rooney---------
Looks very tasty indeed.
Time to stop playing 3-5-2

I can see this happening tbh
------New CM------Herrera----
---------------Mata---------------
Di Maria----------------Rooney
--------------RVP--------------
Don't like seeing Rooney on the left, but it may just happen if Van Gaal wants to fit in our four best players

Mata's lack of pace as a #10 really isn't that big of a hindrance. His first 2 seasons at Chelsea where he mainly operated there he was excellent, no reason why he can't offer us the same.
Why won't he drop RVP, he owes him nothing. If he feels the team can be more balanced without him he will drop him, as he would any player I would hope. Just because they are both Dutch and he made him captain for Holland doesn't mean he has to play him, it only means he felt he was good enough for Holland and the best candidate for captaincy for the Dutch.
This is a completely new job.

--------------De Gea
Rafael--E/S--Rojo---Shaw
---------Herrera--Jones
di Maria------Mata-------Januzaj
---------------Rooney
This is the strongest team I believe we have right now
[I am aware I hate players in the wrong position, but Jones is our best battler in the middle]
Plus, the team doesn't look so bad!

That last sentence really sums this post up.
People are accepting second best (or even third rate players) at OT at the moment.
The names de Gea and Rafael being mentioned in a post that has the phrase "... strongest team ..... " in it, is indicative of how low the expectations and hopes of some people are for this great club.

Don't take IAmMe seriously. He's clearly just a poster who comes on to seek some attention. Every post he manages to 'criticise' Rafael and De Gea. At some point, you have to just laugh at his idiocy.

Agree with that team. I was thinking that Jones might be the best option next to Herrera whilst Carrick is out.
If we are to persist with 3-5-2, for me Carrick will be key. In pre-season, to my eye at least, it was obvious we needed someone to sit a little deeper in midfield and occupy the spaces vacated by Herrera's pressing. Carrick is excellent at this.
When we needed to be more combative, from your lineup I'd say drop Mata, push Herrera a little further forward and pop Jones in next to Carrick. That's all under the assumption we don't sign a more combative, defensive minded/deeper midfield player.

I think the greatest delusion is that in rvp, mata and Rooney we have this great trio of attackers. Here is the reality, they lack pace, limited skill wise, cannot hold up the ball effectively, cannot create chance for themselves, in Rooney poor link up, lack of dribbling ability and first touch that is just 50% on good days.
They cannot play as a top 3. We keep hyping them but theyhave never worked.
