There's been a fair bit of discussion about Gerrard in the past couple of seasons - some think he's a nailed-on starter, others think he's a bit of a liability etc.
Most seem to agree that he's at the stage of his career where, in a season that'll see us compete in 4 competitions, his game time will need to be managed.
With that in mind, do you think Villa should be one of the games he sits out? I know he's getting a good rest with the international break upcoming, but Villa have been rampant at Anfield in recent seasons, with our midfield struggling to keep up with their rapid counter-attacks.
Resting him against Villa also leaves him fresh for the CL opener midweek.
Gerrard against Villa

Wessie Stevie was just back from injury and he was playing as the deep lying midfielder and was isolated, he got over run and we were a bit if mess tactically and had a poor shape in the first half.

Yes, it's kind of coming back to me a bit, now.
I guess the important thing for this weekend, is getting the tactics right, then ....don't let them 'swamp' us in central midfield.

Didnt Gerrard & Hendo play as a midfield 2 against Villa at the start with Coutinho & Sterling on the wings and Suarez & Sturridge upfront...which is what left us massively exposed in the centre....oh am i thinking of another game
Anyway, he should start. Allen will get overrun physically if he plays that role against Villa. He's the only one in the squad i can see playing that role other than Gerrard.

His game time will need managing but not at this stage in the season. He has just had a break of a few weeks thanks to no longer being involved in the farce that is England. I'd expect his game time to be managed around busy periods like Christmas and Easter, then as and when necessary depending on how well we do in other competitions.
Its great to be back in the CL and all that but I think any progress in the CL is a bonus and consolidating our position in the top 4 should be a priority.
