Before United's sacking of Moyes, it looked as though we were close to lining him up as our next boss.
Even after United's interest I thought he may still have chosen us as I thought our squad had more potential to build on rather than a complete overhaul that they obviously needed as losing 3 key defenders, underwhelming midfield and a lack of youth.
Van Gaal clearly prefers a 352, 532 depending how you label it which means I imagine we would line up something like

Naughton................................Rose
..............Capoue........Dembele
....................Eriksen
..........Soldado.......Lamela
(Before transfer window signings and with current injuries)
Given the squad and depth we have, and players that seem to fit into his style, do people think he may have started the season any better than United have thus far?
Just to make clear, I'm perfectly happy with Poch and think he will do a great job with our squad, just opening a debate about how you think a manager that was closely linked with us may have fared with a different squad to work with?
ps, United fans welcome to comment too, but didn't tag your board as is aimed at LVG with Spurs, not how he'll do now he's got his signings with you lot.

To be honest i have been astonished with how much United have spent this summer on transfers and wages and their squad is too lop sided with attacking players.
What they have bought is outstanding quality. Shaw is going to be a top top left back, We all know Di maria and Falcao are world class and Blind is a top player too.
With the huge turnover of players in and out they will be in a transitional phase with so many players having to gel and adapt to the English game.
I think United will finish 4th or 5th this season and next season they will be challenging for the title.
Regarding LVG he is an odd ball and he is arragont but he is a winner. If he had of come to Spurs i dont think he would of got on with Levy. Still, im very happy with Pochettinno and he was our world class signing of the summer. Its going to take time but i can see him building something special at our club.
Hopefully in Jan and next summer we can move into "phase 2" and sign 1 or 2 pacey attacking players.

Hoddle had an interview but they went with Sherwood. I imagine it would be because what Hoddle was suggesting was a bit radical in mid-season.
You know i am certain despite what van gaal says that we never offered him a job he was just used as an advisor to Levy.
This has happened previously when Harry was used as an advisor type thing for years. Mark Hughes rejected us so we moved for Harry instead.
I HATE football at the moment as it is in a transional phrase. You have players playing positions that will be defunct in a few years time. Formations that are settling in. Just think over the 80's/90's/00's it was mainly 4-4-2, 3-5-2 had a renassaince period 96-98, 5-3-2 and 4-5-1 and you played attacking or defensive there was no real inbetween. Nowadays I think that is were the great LVG struggles sometimes same with Hoddle they are too forward thinking with what players roles, formations and tactics are.It has to be confusing for the players.

Are these formations just cause of forward thinking ideas? stubbornness to make it fit? Or sometimes cause of players available / wanting players in your team?
Before Makele, DM was a term that was rarely used, it was always 2 midfielders but one sat deeper or rotated. Today someone like Roy Keane would probably be moulded into that position which would have been such a waste. Hoddle himself would probably have been used where we want Eriksen now, which could have made him undisputedly class, or completely wasted.
LVG probably will switch formations but maybe has absolutely no faith in his defence so trying to protect it a bit more?

Van Gaal first choice formation is 4-3-3 and i expect him to start using that at United now.
