RECIPROCITY

Wenger spent the day with Sir Alex Ferguson at a Uefa conference last week but refused to say what his old adversary thought of United's controversial decision to sell Welbeck, a player had helped nurture since the age of eight.

“I would like to keep that to myself," said Wenger, smiling. “We sold Robin van Persie to Man United, it is a reciprocity that happened."

RVP:

a) World Class
b) Relatively cheap for his ability
c) Almost single handedly won Fergie's lost Premier League
d) Reliably goal scorer
e) Still has a few seasons at the top level
f) Took away Arsenal's biggest threat that season

Welbeck:
a) English
b) Relatively cheap for being English
c) Young, so could be good
d) Fast
e) Did I mention he's English?

Reciprocity in social psychology refers to responding to a positive action with another positive action, rewarding kind actions.

As a social construct, reciprocity means that in response to friendly actions, people are frequently much nicer and much more cooperative than predicted by the self-interest model; conversely, in response to hostile actions they are frequently much more nasty and even brutal.

I didn't know this. Makes the quote make a lot more sense

I thought it was a direct comparison

RvP does not have a few more seasons at the top level. Two at the most. He's lost his passion for the game and was rubbish last year. His injury record is also appalling and won't improve with age.

French

We got a short term gain, an "instant reward" if you will but gambled our long term asset.

RVP to Man Utd

Welbeck to Arsenal

It should be clear to all who got the better of that exchange.

***

probably Arsenal in the long term if Danny comes good

Welbeck is not a young player with great potential. He's 23, has been around for 6 years and has looked no better than decent throughout that time. He could develop into something better at Arsenal but that doesn't translate to "great potential." Not by my definition anyway.

I don't think Welbeck will win them the league, and I don't think they will win the league until they have top quality in that area (ie adding to/replacing Welbeck). So RVP for me is the better deal, regardless of longevity.

c) so far he has only had one good season
_______________________

That's still one more than Welbeck has had!! Besides, RVP has not had one good season, he had one incredible season and one decent season hampered by injury. It's amazing that people make excuses for Danny but not for RVP - i.e. being played wide is a valid excuse but being injured isn't??

If RVP had a poor season last year then why did he still outscore Welbeck despite being injured half the time?

Why is it that Fergie, Moyes and Van Gaal all rate RVP more highly than Welbeck?

All these Welbeck articles seem to be based on the assumption that he will be the next Henry. If that happens then feel free to write all these Welbeck articles in future but the fact remains that Welbeck's goal return at United was fairly pitiful while RVP has a better goals to minutes ratio than either Welbeck or Rooney.

And I'm not interested in hearing excuses like "he played on the wing" because the fact is he would have played up front if he was better than Roo or RVP!!

Let's wait and see what happens in the future but right now Danny is not anywhere near RVP's level - as our esteemed manager has just said...

Or is LVG not qualified to judge the merits of these players? Do we need a new manager already?

I like Welbeck and I wanted to keep him but he is fast becoming the most overrated player in the league!
