Bolton Wanderers manager Dougie Freedman has called for the club’s fans to curb their enthusiasm and start being more ‘realistic’ as they search for players in the emergency loan market.
Freedman said he can feel the pressure after a poor start to the season and failing to fill the void left by Lukas Jutkiewicz after his impressive loan spell at the end of last season, but asked for patience from the fans.
Frurstration
Speaking at Friday’s press conference at the club’s training ground, he said: “I understand the fans’ frustration; ‘we want this, we want that, we want strikers,’ that’s fantastic enthusiasm but sometimes you’ve got to live with reality a little bit and that’s my job.
“I don’t lock myself in a shed when I go home. I understand what we’ve got to do. I do respect the Bolton fans in term of their knowledge, it’s very good when I listen to one or two of them and tell me what we need to do.
“I do get it but there’s one thing wishing and it’s another trying to get.
“I’m the type of coach that wants to get the right type of striker in here, not just anybody and we proved that with Jutkiewicz last year. When someone comes along and he’s the right price, we will try our best. If he’s overpriced, we can’t get him."
Bad luck
The Scottish manager also rued his own personal bad luck after a move for versatile Nottingham Forest defender Greg Halford fell through at the last minute.
He said: “Greg Halford was nearly done and dusted, I spoke to Stuart Pearce and agreed that the boy needed some games, the deal was done financially.
“He trained at Nottingham Forest on the Wednesday and the same day after training, he’d slipped and twisted his ankle. It seems to be where we are right now."
It leaves the Trotters short at right back with Kevin McNaughton likely to miss the weekend’s game against Sheffield Wednesday with illness.
Freedman also admitted that backup right backs Hayden White and Oscar Threlkeld aren’t completely up to scratch: ““Kevin McNaughton’s not well today, he’s phoned in not well so we need to look at that one.
Punished
“The two young players who have come in over the last few games, Oscar and Hayden have not let themselves down but they’re not really up to speed in terms of playing week-in-week-out.
“There’s certain aspects where we’ve been punished very heavily if they’ve made one or two little mistakes and it shows you they’re not quite ready yet.
“They will be players for the club in the future but it’s certainly that boost when there’s a couple of senior players back in the squad to help you ease certain situations when you’re put in a difficult position on the football field."

In football terms it's probably Davies who is simply an investor. Freedman is a fully qualified coach with the highest qualification. Gartside has been a football administrator for years.
In terms of non football it's freedman. Footballers are stupid, well in comparison to a millionaire business man and a trained accountant.

Freedman. He should have never left Palace. Taking the Bolton job at this time is an absolute poison chalice.

Only a poison chalice if a fully qualified coach with the highest qualification can't hack it.
If he had the nous to play the right team on a regular basis, played the right tactics and formation, and made game changing substitutions, we wouldn't be discussing this issue.
The sooner him and Gartside go the better. The only problem is, neither are going anywhere soon.
